While these interesting items are intriguing, they have nothing to do with my real estate business, helping people like you buy and sell homes in Silicon Valley, Calif. and beyond. I admit, they just add fun and fascination to life.

1675 - The first corporation was chartered in the United States. The company was the New York Fishing Company.
1790 - In the United States, President George Washington delivered the first State of the Union address.
1838 - Alfred Vail demonstrated a telegraph code he had devised using dots and dashes to represent letters of the alphabet. Vail’s code was the predecessor to Samuel Morse's code (Morse Code).
1856 - Borax (hydrated sodium borate) was discovered by Dr. John Veatch.
1889 - The tabulating machine was patented by Dr. Herman Hollerith. His firm, Tabulating Machine Company, later became International Business Machines Corporation (IBM).
1935 - The spectrophotometer was patented by A.C. Hardy.
1958 – Teen-ager Bobby Fisher, at the age of 14, won the United States Chess Championship for the first time.
1997 - Mister Rogers, creator and star of the children’s educational program Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
