Feng Shui in New York City @ Historic Tudor City

As well as I think I know New York City and much of Manhattan, I don't know how I've missed this beautiful, historic place.  I'd likely not have seen it, either, had I not been called to Feng Shui a New York City Apartment.  I was fortunate to get there early and had time to explore this lovely part of Midtown that I had never seen before.

It was truly like stepping back in time.  The streets are very narrow for residents only and it is the quietest area of the City I have ever been in; if you didn't KNOW you were in New York City, you wouldn't believe you were right in the HEART of it!

A bit of history that my client shared with me:  Tudor City is a historic district in Midtown Manhattan and was developed in the 1920's by Fred F. French.  He created 12 Buildings, all Tudor Style.  Formerly on this site were tenements, brownhouses, an old gas company, breweries and a slaughterhouse.  And, of course, a horrible smell.

French and Company began building in 1925 and the buildings were finished by 1928.  It contained 3,000 housing units and 600 hotel rooms, now mostly co-ops.  Architect H. Douglas Ives designed the buildings and was known for his intricate stone and brick work.

To attract the Middle Class to the area, they built a park.  The buildings all face inwards to the park to detract from the odors and very few windows faced the East Side (my client was fortunate to have a large window).  The United Nations now stands where the slaughterhouses were.  In another post I will show my clients Feng Shui New York City Apartment but here are some pictures of this beautiful, historic district right in the heart of New York City:

Carole ~ I will look forward to seeing the pictures of your client's apartment.  Meanwhile, I had never heard of this area.  It looks like there is no traffic in your picture, which, besides the noise, is almost unheard of in the city!  The buildings are amazing looking, and that little park must look quite charming in the spring.

Kathy, As many times as I have been to New York City I have never wandered into this--it is SO beautiful, very small area and very QUIET!

Diane, The fun thing about New York City is there are always different things to discover.  This was a truly beautiful find!

Teri, You have missed so much!  The Village is SO much fun and Midtown is so much fun.  You'll have to make plans to come back (and not for a convention :)  I'm going to the Seaport when it warms up.

Deborah, I heard last night they are changing our skyline...again.  A new condominium complex is going up and it's going to be taller then many of the buildings that already exist!  Tudor City was spectacular, I loved every second and you're right, you would too!

Carol, I loved 'discovering' this place, it was an adventure for me!  They set it up beautifully, everything you need or want is right in that small area.

Jackie, I have to find that flower market!!  I wonder if I've missed that as well in which case I'm going to get a guide to New York City :)

Gayle, I don't believe they allow the buses down there, the cab left me on the corner and I had to walk the rest of the way :)  The streets are SO narrow, the only trucks I saw were delivery trucks.  It's very possible you were right at the entrance or they allowed buses before.

Jeff & Grace, I love showing pictures like this, I know if I'm entralled some others will be as well!

Jennifer, It is far from Middle Class now, you need some money to live there!  Since the area had been so bad they built that park---it obviously worked :)

Joan, I know, it makes me wonder what ELSE I'm missing!  New York City is not all that big, I should have it 'down' by now :)

Candy, The buildings are just beautiful!  Apparently when they were building they didn't think much about cars, though, they were literally parked within a inch of eachother :)

Sally, What a find, I loved it!  I have about 30 more pictures, it was just beautiful!

Julie, The area was magnificent and so was the architecture.  I always love finding something new (to me)

Carole,

What a fascinating history Tudor City has. The buildings are so stately and beautiful....and I love the idea of the little park.  Developers had such vision back then.

Lovely pictures, thank you for the history lesson and sharing these wonderful photos.

Jo, It was a wonderful 'find' and actually fit into your category!  Double luck...I couldn't believe how quiet it was, I would have thought I was anywhere but New York City :)

Kim, It's a small area so definitely put it on your list.  If I didn't have the exact address the cab driver wouldn't have found it!

Carole:  Your city is so rich and diverse with its history and such beautiful architecture.  It looks to me like New York City overall has great feng shui!  Enjoyed the post and it sounds just like a place where I would want to live in if were a city gal.

Carole... very interesting. I love learning so much about NYC.  It's amazing that he did all of this building right before the great depression. In any case, I love architecture and next time I am in the area, I am going to take a peak...  thanks for sharing this.

Joan, I never, ever get tired of New York.  It facinates me that I still don't know all of it!

Donna, I believe many parts of New York City DO have good Feng Shui.  I would love to live in the City for just a year...and then would be ready to come back to the Island :)

Cynthia, I was so excited!  It's so much fun to run into something you weren't at all expecting---and it always happens in NY :)

Ginger, Thank you, it was....places to eat, dry cleaner, grocery store...you never had to leave there if you didn't want to.

Jeff, You won't believe how quiet it is, you could never tell you're in New York City.  And the views over the water are gorgeous.

Trace, Oh, I did love it, it was a totally unexpected wonderful surprise to see this!

I love reading and learning about your area ! Those pictures are breathtaking ! I thought of you yesterday by the way ! I was in the grocery store and was looking for some "healthy" snacks and found Feng Shui Rice Crackers...I am so glad that they are healthy 'cause I sat and ate the whole bag last night playing spades in pogo !

Melissa, This place facinated me, it was a City in a City!  Boy, they'll Feng Shui anything now,  I wonder what makes these Rice Crackers different from any others?  It's almost funny, they'll add Feng Shui to something and charge extra money for it :)
