Feeding the Fire - How Do You Keep on Track?

Feeding the tummy

So the new year has started off with a roar and I'm having trouble implementing my business plan...one item of which is writing a blog a day.  Blogging brings in half my business, and thus I must keep "feeding the fire".

I DID start the week off with a necessary diet - something I've not done for a year.  Three days in...doing good so far. (So not feeding the fire, OR the tummy)

Had an inspection today with a new buyer, a listing appointment this afternoon, a closing next week and a buyer I've communicated for over 3 years finally coming to town with his wife with a plan to purchase...something very, very nice.  (I'm on fire with enthusiasm!)

I like the drip system Long Realty has for their agents to stay in contact, but I also like the personal touch and find it does really, really well for me.

About a month ago I started writing little notes to my sphere of influence--the basic stuff they tell you to do when you're a new agent.  Foundational.

From writing those notes, I've gotten a two buyer referrals, and a conversion from lead to a buying client as well.

It's good to have a foundation. Gotta work that business plan though, because we must always be planning ahead when we are self-employed.

What tips do you use to keep yourself on track?

Anything that brought me half my business I would find easy to do. I also have gotten in the habit of writing a note a day to someone in my SOI. Always by snail mail.

Hi Cara, you ask "How Do You Keep on Track?" I don't anymore, but I used to extremely well because I wanted it so much.  My desire to reach my goals kept me on track.  But it sounds like you're doing very well even though you feel you're not on track.  Maybe you should change your plan?  Also, just like you'll probably do anything for your granddaughter because you know she depends on you, sometimes having a RE partner who depends on you can help you stay on track.

It is best to work with a CRM to input and keep one on track to make calls and close deals.

Cara, I am a digital gal who carries a paper calendar to keep my accountable.  I think the biggest thing with great starts is exaclty that... keeping track and accountable.  For my calls, I have a legal size page of 200 small checked boxes.  It is my call tracker.  I carry it with it and track each lead generation call I make.  My goal is 200 a week.  I have not made it, however, when I see this paper, I realize that I need to make certain lead generation is on my schedule.  I have one new listing for the year to-date.  More to come.  May your 2013 be filled with success!

Yes, it's hard to stay on track, when you get so busy.  For me, I have some items that are daily (first thing in the morning), and some I do every weekend, and some that are triggered by the 1st of the month.  I keep lists and love checking them off, so that helps me stay committed.

Great article! Cara, my goal for Janurary is to create a calendar for my Sales / Marketing side of my business in 2013. That will include print advertisements, my "Breakfast to Businesses", personal notes, etc. That will personally keep me on track generating referrals and I know what I will be doing all year long! You have to get back to the basics and get face to face with these people. Although most might not believe it since I'm a younger generation Realtor, I do believe that technology is a great tool for us, but sometimes old fashion works best!

Beth - thank you for sharing your ideas.  I really need to do the time block too...in fact, it is my intention to do Active Rain first thing in the morning, but even today....there's a message from Equator just eating at me before I've written my blog...

John F. - I think you'll find it does!  Not only in leads, referrals and other business facets, but personally as you become more fired up about your subject matter over time.  It's...consuming in a good way!

Hella - sounds like you hit upon a routine perfect for you...I think knowing your best time of day for particular tasks is awesome.

Wayne and Jean - as the experts point out - so much is done electronically that sometimes, a switch to old-fashioned is best.  Remember when service folk used to fill up our cars, wash our windows, check under he hood???  I was just a kid then, but I'd appreciate not smelling of gasoline in my good clothes.

Kymberly - Great reminder - I bet so many of us need to do the business card thing more - I know I do!

Kathy S...Ha...my husband said January is probably a BOON month for fruits and vegetables... A timer sounds good.  See, I can while away a couple hours on AR, reading and commenting...

Catherine - Who doesn't love photos?  I'll watch for your blogs.

Joel - that's what I keep telling myself.  However, as the months and months roll by, you can take things for granted....not wise.

We found that the best way to stay on track is to have a schedule and let nothing pull you away from that schedule.  If you make calls from 9a-11a and you get an appointment.  Don't make that appointment for 10:30a.  Stick to your schedule and it will help you be more focused on the activities at hand.

Melissa - That's where I need to get to regarding blogging and exercise!

Lloyd - Great idea.  I've actually been grooming a newer agent in my office and just offered her a co-listing.  I think it's vital to get a RE partner when you get to a certain level of business.

I am doing absolutely great right now, and all last year...but I know that having routines in place (like prospecting) are vital to sustaining the flow.  Thanks Lloyd.

Harry - I can see you definitely have systems in place.  You're getting close to becoming an AR millionaire!  Congrats on your longevity and commitment.

Candace - Name tag - great conversation starter!   I guess my business plan is more of a goal/action too.  I can't be too rigid, but I did put a blog a day, and a certain time for particular tasks during a week, month, etc.

Ed - To you as well.  The foundation SOI is always a solid place to re-invent and re-charge.

Christina - Wow...200. I will look forward to you sharing your success this year through blogging.

Debbie - likewise...I need to do certain things at certain times or they just don't get done.

Adam - Breakfast to Businesses...sounds interesting.  I love tracking referrals...or, actually, looking back on a year of tracking them.  :)  I'm doing more public events this year.  Here's to 2013!

H Cara...

I used the old tried and true methods...I have a legal pad and write down things to do. Then there are things that need to get done right away and then there is tomorrow....then I put legs on it all and scratch off things as they get done. I make a new list daily. Time management helps and I have made a lot of my business dealings part of my normal routines...good post and host ...always fond thoughts to you

There are two things to keep in mind when implementing a business plan; the plan is subject to change and there will always be change. That said, I would suggest implementing small pieces on a daily basis. Small and study will eventually get the entire plan implemented but don't be rigid in either how or when.

Skip food?!  NEVER!!  I have gained a few pounds, so I guess I'd better work out more :)

It sounds like you are staying on track - CONGRATS!!

I agree w/keeping the personal touch in.  We need to focus on techie stuff (blogs, websites, etc.), but we can NOT forget paper (handwritten notes, calendar, etc.)!!

I would like to recommend Time Blocking:  http://realtytimes.com/rtpages/20101015_mistake.htm

Richie - my author friend with always something kind to say...Happy New Year!  Thanks for stopping by and sharing your to-do list.  :)

Bryan - I agree - being rigid really never helped anyone in implementing change and adaptability!

Fernando - I should do that...  I like the one thing at a time idea, but man, when you're writing your blog post and your email keeps chiming...it's hard not to look!

Steph - thanks for the link...I will read!
