Thanks to ActiveRain I have discovered a new (to me) place for home tours. I have used Listing Domains in the past. The new service seems more economical. I signed up for a two week trail period and am playing around with the service. I have utilized the music option for home tours in the past. I am questioning whether to have to music or not. This service has a good selection of music. I think you can even add your own. There is a volume symbol that you have the ability to turn the music down.

I don't know if this music feature would be a bother to some people. Maybe the person is checking for houses at a work computer. The music might not be very discreet! What I find cheerful, another might find annoying.

Has anyone given this any thought? I may be over-thinking this.

Thanks,

Amy Jones

5 Comments on Music or Mute- it (home tours)

Are you using the listing domains site for your home tour? I found that soft music is the best choice for me. I also believe people can mute it as well. I have enjoyed using their format.

Basic rule of thumb:

Music or video should NEVER automatically start.  Ever.

It should always be a choice.

1) The vast majority of people surf at work.  They're not supposed to be, and many are in cubicles.  They usually have their sound turned down.  If they don't, when music starts, they will SHUT your site down so fast it won't be funny.

2) If someone is on the phone and surfing, the LAST thing you want is some cheesy rollerskating music blasting away because you just stumbled on a site.  It's unprofessional, and has happened to me MANY times.  It makes me very angry because I was NOT expecting it.

3) You're assuming that people have the same taste in music as you do.  Unless there is a REASON to put music there, it's probably not the best idea unless it's background music behind a narrative. I've quickly shut down tours with some God awful music (in my mind)....  it was just too annoying. That's usually why I stay on some MySpace sites for 3 seconds.  The music is horrendous.  And LOUD.

I also shut down most Visual Tours because most agents use the default music, which sounds like a bad imitation of something that was played at a funeral.  I absolutely can't stand it and I click off immediately.  Again, if it serves no purpose, silence is golden sometimes.  Especially if I'm already listening to music in my office that I LIKE!

It's just common courtesy.  Give people the OPTION of listening to music or watching a tour.

And.. on the subject of music, don't forget copyright issues.  You can't just use ANY music.  It must be royalty free.

Katharine, I have used Listing Domains. I am looking into another provider. They are more economical at $125 a year for unlimited shows. I made a silly test tour with my dog and an unused domain name http://agentamy.info/ - what do you think?

Fred, Thank you for your input. Your services look like good quality work.

Amy,

I agree with Fred!  I like to have the option of music, and if opting it, being able to control the volume.  Great advice from Fred!  Also, I looked into the website you're discussing - it's great!

Thanks Tina,

I'm glad you like the new (to us) site. Did you set your new shows to start with music playing?

Amy
