The Christmas Day Re-Enactment of Washington Crossing the Delaware River. The Delaware River was too swift this winter of 2012 to cross as Washington and his troops did way back on Christmas Day 1776.
Gloria - what did they do instead of the re-enactment? (That's what I posted before but it didn't take).
Hi Toni, Hopefully you will figure out the cell phone commenting.
They did the their gathering of troops on land and roll calls and some marching. Then Washington talked about their plans to cross the river. They did get in the 3 boats and headed up stream a short distance. The first boat ventured out to the small island on the right and determined the water was just too swift for they would have ended up downstream too far.
Having never seen this re-enactment before and wanting to for many years, I was happy to see them dressed up, acting out the parts and getting on the water a little.
A good family outing to mark the Christmas day.
Thanks for asking.
Gloria
I often envy the part of the country you live in, which is so rich in our early heritage. California pretty much had to wait for the California Gold Rush to get any history going. Neat photo, Gloria! It looks like it could have been taken yesterday, or 236 years ago.
Doug and Gloria, I love this photo! It looks like something that should really be an old oil painting.
Thanks for sharing your photograph.
I hope you are having a most productive January.
Gloria,
It's important to understand what they faced. Nice post. :)
