Want to blog fast and easy? Stop typing and do this

None of the text in this blog article was typed by me.  I can type pretty fast but are many times when I just don't feel like typing a blog. Just by chance there was an offer to buy voice dictation software at a really good price during Black Friday. I bought a copy and have been ecstatic ever since.

What are the advantages of using voice dictation in blogging?

  • Comments and blogs are done three times faster
  • I tend to make longer comments
  • I can write more blogs in a single sitting
  • I can write many more comments
  • What I write comes across more like my voice than my writing style

Let's address a couple of the key advantages of using voice dictation software in your day-to-day blogging.  The two biggest advantages are speed and quality. Because you're speaking you can dictate comments in blogs roughly 3 times faster than if you were typing a professional level. Since most people don't type that fast actual dictation performance is probably much higher. I just dictated this paragraph in about 30 seconds.  The other advantage is quality and let's talk about that in more detail.

How does diction software improve blog and comment quality?

Using dictation software allows me to post longer comments with more detail and a better expression of how I feel that if I just type in a quick sentence or two. To me that means I'm offering better value to the people who took the time to write the blog in the first place by giving them better expression of what's really on my mind.

Blog quality increases substantially because I can sit here and effectively write (was "right") just the way I speak. Having that style of writing that matches my speaking means my inner voice comes through much more clearly. I find that this means I can say more with richer wording than just trying to type slowly and work it out as I go along.

What do I get and where do I get it?

My recommendation is to buy Dragon Naturally Speaking home edition.  The current software package includes the actual software as well as a headphone set that allows me to listen and dictate with improved accuracy. It's available on Amazon.com for only $50. Given the amount of time that I've saved using the software it was well worth the expense.

If you want to improve the quality, quantity, and speed of your blogging this is the best software to do it with.

Lots of comments and questions so let me try to address them here:

- I use dictation software when I'm in a crunch or just need a break from typing.  It's not all the time.  For the record, I can actually type very fast.

- EDITING!  As good as Dragon is, it does make mistakes and I do have to fix them.  There are commands to do it verbally but it can also be done via typing.

- BULLET LISTS, ETC  Dragon can do all sorts of special things with the right commands.  They have a guide that talks about everything from new paragraphs to commas, you just need to say the right command.

- LEARNING CURVE   Dragon requires a little training but it only takes a few minutes.  It basically does a great job right out of the box.  It does improve by scanning what you write and with continued use.

-  TIME INVOLVED   Generally, after correcting, I find that Dragon cuts my blog time in half which means an article takes about 10 minutes compared to the old 20.

I have worked with voice activation systems and they are still developing. They are only as good as our enunciation and then there are no gurantees...good post

Bryan, I trained years ago to be a Court Reporter, went through 2-1/2 years of training and was preparing for state test when I decided to get honest with myself and admit that I HATED IT!  Nevertheless, there are problems with this type of software and manual editing is necessary.  I type very fast.  In addition, I find that the process of typing allows my thoughts to fully process, producing an appropriate text.  I think differently when I type than when I talk!

Glad it works for you, but I have to give it "two thumbs down."

The medical field tried these softwares for medical transcription and many have abandoned it due to its inability to "think" and use context to produce an accurate record.

I love this concept-- voice command my emails and text via my driod probably 90% of the time..would be ideal to get acclimated with this program for my laptop . Thanks for the insight.. I will be looking into this system.

Comment #57 pointed out that accents can work against you. I've always had trouble with those voice recognition type programs although I was raised in this country.

Voice recognition software is a great answer and timesaver. As long as you go back and preview and correct your post before publishing, you can save tons of time. I do see many of my colleagues don't believe in previewing before publishing...

Jill in #77:  I am not surprised that you have had trouble with this... you having what I am guessing is an East Texas accent.  At least that's what I thought I was hearing on that "blooper" video.

But, not to worry.  We all luv' ya.'

Nice post Bryan! The dictation feature on my phone makes writing so much easier now. So many times the words leave you between the time you think them and type them. Now, I can just talk and have it appear on my screen to send out. My ActiveRain posts are one things that I haven't been doing though. This reminds me that I should start including these in there too.

Bryan, this is just absolutely amazing.  I am not sure if I would be good at dictating on the spot.  I need time to think before I speak.  It is a very affordable software, too bad it is working on a PC only.

Thanks a lot, Bryan. My team leader uses Dragon. I will have to talk to him more about his likes and dislikes. The price is right if it saves as much time for me as it does for you.

Hi Bryan -

I saw this on Karen Anne's blog and thought I'd pop over to say hi!  I think I have to stick to writing. In part I am a fairly quick typist, but also it helps me see my thoughts and occasionally am organized. I think if I voice dictate I'll ramble, more than I already do. I'll keep in in mind however. Thanks for sharing!

Bryan I didn't even know that this particular product was still around.  Seems I used to use it in the late 80's.  I can't see any reason why I couldn't use this for blogging.

I could see perhaps this being used in a way similar to texting... in that it might be pretty simple to use.  But... I cannot see it used when you are trying to blog about something that requires some effort, some talent and some creativity.  But, that's just me.  To each her own.

I saw this tonight on Karen Anne's post too...wow, in that short sentence I backspaced 4 times!  I can definitely see an advantage, especially when one is tired!  I might have to give it a try too!

Thanks!
