Getting married is a leap of faith- a momentous milestone. Our son recently announced that he proposed and is working with his bride-to-be at setting a date. I look at the two of them and think, “They are so young.” While they are focused on the big details, as a parent, I am focused on the little things. For instance, who is going to make the coffee in the morning? When the lawn needs mowed, will they have the proper equipment? When one of them loses their hearing and the other forgets who they are will they still want to be in the same room together?
That’s the funny thing about love, though. When you fall in love you don’t really think about what will happen years from now. When you know – you know. However, there are so many who think they know only to find out a few years later they didn’t know anything at all. This thought can be supported by the astronomical divorce rate. I don’t want them to become a statistic.
So I am reaching out to you – what advice do you give to your children about marriage? Do they listen when you explain the bad alongside the good? It is difficult to find the words sometimes when all that really needs to be said is a simple I love you.
