NEW FEMA MAP STATS SHOW DAMAGE TO LONG ISLAND AFTER SANDY

This map put out by the Federal Emergency Management Agency shows the amounts of water experienced by various communities in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Dark blue areas indicate extent of flood and figures show maximum water height. Nassau County was hit harder than Suffolk County in this storm. The news article written by Bill Bleyer summarizes the need for revising flood zone maps based on this new data.

Jill ~ the facts and figures in this article are staggering.  How one storm could wreak so much havoc is beyond comprehension.  Surely it will take a long time to remove all the debris and rebuild.

Maureen - They're still trying to figure it out. Receiving the financial aid has been the biggest obstacle.

Joe - I don't normally reprint something that is readily available in the newspaper but this map summarized the damage so well, I wanted people from out of state to see it.

Jill, thanks for showing us this map. I knew the amount of damage was significant but hearing it and seeing it are two different things. When you listen to the news you only see areas at a time, this map shows the bigger picture. I understand that most of these people are still without aid!

Thanks, Rob. It really makes an impact when you see it all at once.

Michael, Most people didn't have flood insurance and even for those who did, oftentimes it wasn't enough. The maximum FEMA aid amount is $31,900. For those who lost entire lower levels and first floors, that amount is a drop in the bucket. Some owners are just walking away from this mess.

Jill  I have been after our county to get a FEMA flood plain map.  Without it, Underwriters have denied loans to people that could write a check for the property.  But, the county is hesitant to spend the money.  I'm scared this will come back to haunt us.  Great blog...thanks
