OK, I have a weird sense of humor and it comes out from time to time in my posts, but my kids have to live with this and a lot of times they just don't get dad's jokes to mom. So I've started to make a DVD, not to warp them, but hopefully help them understand that dad watched a lot of TV and remembers his childhood, even though hecan't remember where he put his car keys 10 minutes ago.
My daughter is nine and has a great sarcastic sense of humor. She is slowly starting understand me now that I am starting to show her old commercials and songs that I have found on YouTube. Now she is starting to understand daddy's and mommy's jokes.
The other day we were walking in from the store and I threw her the toilet paper and told her to carry it in, but "don't squeeze the Charmin" or she will be grounded! She, of course, didn't get it and I had to show her yet another commercial from my youth.
We have started to call my three year old "Miss Talks a lot" because she talks so much. It doesn't even stop when she goes to sleep. If you want to listen, or not, she will talk to you or anyone else within earshot! So I was telling her that they had a song written about her called "You talk too much". Of course she looked at me and said, "No, they don't daddy" so I pulled out this one on her. Of course this gave her even more to talk about when she told people they wrote a song about her. If you don't believe me that she talks too much, then you need to see her talking to herself in the mirror, because everyone else is busy.
I think one of the ones that got them to laugh the most was the old Wendy's commercial, "Where's the beef?" Now my wife and I are a little cruder with they way we use the phrase, but she can wait until she is older to figure that out.
Now, is this working? I think so, especially when I heard my nine year old talking and saying, "One, Two-hoo, Three...CRUNCH" while eating dinner the other night. Clearly that commercial stuck in her head as it did mine!
Most of the time they just roll their eyes, but other times they laugh just as much as I did when I was a kid! If you have kids and want to get them to understand you a little better, make them a DVD of your childhood and it just may help. If you have a commercial that you remember, post a link of it here and I may put it on my kids'
DVD.
