I’m trying to help my kids understand me!

OK, I have a weird sense of humor and it comes out from time to time in my posts, but my kids have to live with this and a lot of times they just don't get dad's jokes to mom. So I've started to make a DVD, not to warp them, but hopefully help them understand that dad watched a lot of TV and remembers his childhood, even though hecan't remember where he put his car keys 10 minutes ago.

My daughter is nine and has a great sarcastic sense of humor. She is slowly starting understand me now that I am starting to show her old commercials and songs that I have found on YouTube.  Now she is starting to understand daddy's and mommy's jokes.

The other day we were walking in from the store and I threw her the toilet paper and told her to carry it in, but "don't squeeze the Charmin" or she will be grounded! She, of course, didn't get it and I had to show her yet another commercial from my youth.

We have started to call my three year old "Miss Talks a lot" because she talks so much. It doesn't even stop when she goes to sleep. If you want to listen, or not, she will talk to you or anyone else within earshot! So I was telling her that they had a song written about her called "You talk too much". Of course she looked at me and said, "No, they don't daddy" so I pulled out this one on her. Of course this gave her even more to talk about when she told people they wrote a song about her. If you don't believe me that she talks too much, then you need to see her talking to herself in the mirror, because everyone else is busy.

I think one of the ones that got them to laugh the most was the old Wendy's commercial, "Where's the beef?" Now my wife and I are a little cruder with they way we use the phrase, but she can wait until she is older to figure that out.

Now, is this working? I think so, especially when I heard my nine year old talking and saying, "One, Two-hoo, Three...CRUNCH" while eating dinner the other night. Clearly that commercial stuck in her head as it did mine!

Most of the time they just roll their eyes, but other times they laugh just as much as I did when I was a kid! If you have kids and want to get them to understand you a little better, make them a DVD of your childhood and it just may help. If you have a commercial that you remember, post a link of it here and I may put it on my kids'
DVD.

Todd - this is too funny!  Some of this stuff should be on 'funniest home videos' or whatever it's called.  You're going to have a bunch of warped teens before too long!

Dude - We are way too similar.  I haven't started the DVD (yet) but my kids know all about the Tootsie Roll pop, because I taught them about it.  I like the idea of collecting a greatest hits of commercials/songs.  Great stuff!  I featured this one in Family Ties.

Todd - It is amazing how these funny commercials and videos are forgotten.  I love how you are showing your kids.

Oh man!!! I remember that darn tootsie-roll pop commercial!

Sorry though, I can't put my finger on the others. I will say though that it's pretty cool how you can just flip through youtube and put these commercials up to share with your kids. Now they won't roll their eyes when you say something they don't understand.

My hubby came up behind me while I was reading this and said" Is that where'e the beef? I loved that!" Ah memories...what a great idea! Half the time my son just looks at me like I am growing another head when I talk about these things..This is a great way to show him and spend time. If you can get a 17 yr old boy to sit and pay attention long enough...lol

My daughter (age 8) and I starting watching a re-run of 'Laverne and Shirley.'  We saw the beginning credits, when Lavern and Shirley are running through Milwaukee and working at the brewery. My daughter got this glow of recognition over her face and exclaimed, "Look Mom, they copied Wayne and Garth!"  (movie: Wayne's World)

That was interesting to explain.  I still don't know if she got it.

That is a REALLY good idea.   I am constantly telling my daughter to "hop along cassidy", but she just says "stop calling me Cassidy!!" I never thought to look up the old stories and commercials online!

Mary - I am already starting to see signs of it with my 10 year old daughter.

Jason - Thanks for the feature Jason, I tell you that DVD in the car is still a big hit... Some old TV shows have now made there way in to the collection. Me and my son watch "The Incredible Hulk" and "Airwolf" together all the time. Still can't get him hooked on Night Rider yet, maybe another couple years.

Candy - I just got tired of them rolling their eyes at us because they didn't understand why we were doing or saying what we were saying. Now, they beat us to the punch sometimes with the lines.

Marlene - It really does make us closer as a family.

Ricardo - I think you may even be too young for some of these. Most of these were from the 70s.

Vanessa - E-mail it to them and they may just pay attention... (LOL)

Roberta - At our age, make sure you don't throw your back out laughing to hard. I did that exact thing last night... DANG IT, when did I get old?

Laurie - OUCH, NO, they didn't copy Wayne's World!
