Shawnee KS Real Estate: What's up with Walk Scores?

Are you looking for a great Shawnee KS home and wondering about the walk score?

Truthfully, if walk score is really important to you, then you probably will be looking at living in Kansas City, Mo or some other neighborhood in the  Kansas City metropolitan area.  Although some neighborhoods out here in the suburbs have very convenient locations, the walk score probably isn't high for most neighborhoods in Shawnee or Overland Park.  We seem to be car dependent. Image of children walking

On the other hand, Kansas City, MO rates very high nationally with walkability scores, particularly in favorite neighborhoods like Old Westport, the Country Club Plaza, Crown Center, and the new developments downtown.  Other older charming neighborhoods like Brookside and Waldo have very respectable walk scores and easy access to public transportation.

Walk scores are based on an algorithm which weights factors like access to grocery stores, coffee shop, restaurant, parks, schools, and other aspects of daily life.  As an example, the neighborhood that I live in ranks fairly high for suburbia.  Our walk score is 63.  However, the grocery store cited is Big Lots.  Big Lots is a liquidator and it does carry some groceries, but you couldn't walk there for milk or bread.  Starbucks, on the other hand, is easily walkable if you desired to do so.  Although we are close to a public transportation route, the reality is that the bus doesn't come very often and it goes only on a single designated line.  It would be difficult to depend on the bus for all of your transportation needs.  It would be wise to look beyond just the score and see what services are reflected in that score.

Most Shawnee neighborhoods offer services that are conveniently available in a short commute.  Shawnee, KS is a very convenient place to live and people are friendly.  Services are available and usually without long wait times.

Tammy, I've enjoyed reading your posts. I agree. Walk score can be important. We're out here where land is plentiful and people want several acres all alone and secluded right next to restaurants, grocery stores, and theaters. Sometimes we can even find them what they want. Lol
