This week’s Parade magazine is dedicated to helping you save more money this year. The magazine recommends an array of cost-cutting measures with savings ranging from about $40 a year, to several thousand. One of the larger potential cost savings suggested is to Challenge Your Property Taxes.
As a Realtor and an Appraisal Assistant with Ron DiDonna Real Estate & Appraisals, I can attest to the fact that our clients can save at least several hundred dollars per year by challenging their property taxes – with a large percentage of them saving more than the cost of the appraisal and grievance just in the first year.
January is an excellent time to begin your grievance process, especially if you want to beat the rush around Tax Grievance Day in May. All the data is already out there to begin your appraisal (the property tax grievance has to be based on what the value of your home was as of the previous July 1st). For this year, the effective date of your appraisal would be July 1, 2012.
