Basement Inspiration

We know that though it’s winter time, you’re already dreaming of spring. With spring comes those seasonal changes idyllic for the home remodeling projects you can’t wait to accomplish. Area home shows are already in full swing and home improvement businesses are stocking up in preparation. Now is a good time to begin brainstorming what needs the most change at your place.

Smith Mountain Lake homes are typically a perfect gathering place for family members, friends and community groups. Everyone wants to take advantage of the peaceful environment and especially the excitement of lake activity. What this amounts to is a house that could usually use an increase in space for people and their things. One of the best ways to maximize a home’s hospitality value is by using the basement to its fullest.

Many lake residents opt to designate the basement as the recreational center of the home. HGTV provides great insight into how to make the most of your house’s basement

  • Divide and conquer: Divide the space into specific functions. Make one section a relaxing living area and the other an active entertainment spot. For example, make one side the home theater area with television and seating and the other a pool table and ping-pong activity center.
  • Design for all ages: the basement should be versatile enough for both children and adults. Add pops of color and child-sized furniture for the younger family members to enjoy.
  • Second Home Haven: If your house is occupied by extra people for long periods, perhaps its time to make the basement its own one-level living location. Give yourself and your live-in guests the privacy and comfort you both need by putting a living, dining and bedroom area all in the basement. Let your lowest level serve as an apartment of sorts and you’ll be guaranteed less stressful visits.

Some of my best memories are of Smith Mountain Lake vacations.

The homes we've rented there for vacation purpose sort of have your ideas in play. There is room in the basement, but not all had them finished for consistent usage.
