National Home Insurance Ratings.

Protect your home; both Consumer Report and J.D.Power came out with separate homeowner insurance reports and ratings in September 2012.

According to the survey the greater the damages the greater the likelihood the homeowner received less than expected with almost 10% overall of the survey were in disagreement with the claim payment but when damages were over $25,000, 19% were in disagreement.

Both reports and ratings have Amica Insurance with the best reviews and with Erie Insurance and State Farm above industry standards. Both reports also have MetLife, Travelers, Farmers and Allstate below industry standards. To see how the customer satisfaction index was determined please visit each article.

If you are at an impasse with your claim you can hire a public adjuster who will negotiate with the insurance company for you usually at around a ten percent fee of your payout. To find a public adjuster go to the National Association of Public Insurance Adjusters and click on the link "find an adjuster", look for one with experience, good reviews and your state license if needed.

Many insurance companies have been increasing their deductibles on severe weather events or all together not providing coverage in certain regions. As well in the past few years homeowners have seen an increases of 5 to 10 percent annually with some industry experts predicting up to a 12% increase this coming year.

Bundling your auto and home insurance package together under one insurer can save you up to 15% with some companies. Insurance companies are using more and more now your credit score to help determine rates, the higher your credit score (that is good) the lower rates you could get. Click here for 10 more tips on lowering your homeowners insurance.

Many states like Connecticut have Insurance Departments that provide valuable information, links and tips for homeowners. If your state does not then you next best bet is to find an independent local agent who can get you quotes from multiple insurers. To find an independent agent go to Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers Association.

Folks do not understand that their rate is also affected by prior claims.  C.L.U.E has it all.

David, this is not good. My insurance company is one of the ones listed below industry standards. We had a claim after a severe snow storm a couple of years ago. The adjuster they sent out gave us a really hard time. In the end it worked out, but it took forever because he wanted to get estimates from vendors outside of our geographical area.

I'm so glad this was done before the hurricane, as I was afraid that might skew the results.  Yes, there do tend to be more disputes when there is more extensive damage.

Michael, the survey is done by homeowners rating the performance and satisfaction of their insurance companies, it seems by your experience you agree with the findings.

Lenn, in one of the reports they say the average claim is 1 in every 6 years, in 20 years I never had a claim but I maintain my properties and correct problems before they become main issues.

Deb, JD Powers has been doing this survey for 12 years, it will be interesting to see what happens in the 2013 survey.

David, My insurance company ranked below the Industry standards, but handled my claim efficiently and expedited the payment.  Regarding deductibles, it is true about the increase.  I had an old policy and had a low deductible.  When I received my new homeowners this month, it was very high.  I inquired with the insurance co. regarding the large increase.  I found that by increasing my deductible by $500, I was able to save $269.00 on my policy.

I'm going to check out Amica. The cost for our insurance keeps going up, but I've been afraid to switch to someone who might not give service if ever needed.  Thanks for the reports!  I'm going to add a link to your article to my article for homebuyers, hope that's OK.

Susan ~

The ratings of the two reports are on customer satisfaction, being at the top of the list does not mean it is the cheapest.

Joetta ~

If you are thinking of changing then read both reports first to help you ask the right questions.

David, I have to take this home and show my husband. He is NOT going to be happy about where our company ranks.
