Greener Cleaner - Misc. Kitchen Stuff!

By
Real Estate Agent with Windermere Real Estate

This will finish off the cleaning tips for kitchen!  Here are a few other miscellaneous things in the kitchen, such as your garbage disposal!  I will post later about more household cleaners, including ones for your carpet, upholstery, floors, furniture, and even your cars!  Check back for more tips!

Drain Opener and Garbage Disposal Cleaner:
For slow drains, use this drain cleaner once a week to keep drains fresh and clog-free.
1/2 to 1 cup baking soda
1 cup white vinegar
1 gallon boiling water
1/2 a used lemon
Pour baking soda down drain/disposal, followed by vinegar. Allow the mixture to foam for several minutes before flushing the drain with boiling water.

Garbage Disposal:
To eliminate garbage disposal odors and clean and sharpen blades, grind ice and used lemon and/or orange rinds until pulverized.

Kitchen Safety: Fire
1) Emergency fire extinguisher: if a greasy pan catches on fire, turn the heat off and try to cover the pan. Sprinkle powdered baking soda over the fire. (Fill a large coffee can with baking soda and keep it near the stove.
2) An oven fire is easily extinguished by closing the door after shutting off the heat.)

As always, Please feel free to comment with questions or with anything to add!

Jonelle-

I love the fire safety tips you've included. Is there anything that Baking Soda isn't great for??? You know the aluminum foil and boiling water to clean silver one, right?

Jonelle,  I'm glad you posted this.  I have always kept a coffee can of baking soda next to the stove.  Back in my teaching days, the baking soda company would send you a red cover for the coffee can with a fire prevention design.  In fact one year, I gave these cans (covered in contact paper) away as holiday gifts to my family.  A few years ago we had the chance to use it.  We had on old electric stove and apparently grease had built up under the burners.  A small fire erupted under one of the coils and I quickly covered it with a large lid.  When I did this, fire erupted out from the other three burners!  I grabbed my can and dumped the whole load of baking soda on the burners.  It put the fire out immediately.
