2013 Python Challenge in the Everglades
The 2013 Python Challenge started Saturday, Jan 12 and continues through February 10. The challenge is being held to help reduce the number of invasive Burmese pythons in the Everglades. Burmese pythons can grow to 26 feet and are native to India, China, and the Malay Peninsula. They can live up to 25 years in the wild; juveniles and eggs are eaten by predators but adults over 8 feet become a problem. Why a python challenge? The large, established colony is a danger to native wildlife. But, only pythons from the wildlife management areas of Everglades and Francis S. Taylor, Holey Land, Rotenberger and Big Cypress will be counted.
The prize for the biggest python is $1,000. The most pythons caught wins a prize of $1,500. The event will promote awareness of the threat posed by invasive Burmese pythons in south Florida.
The 2013 Python Awareness and Awards Event will be held Feb. 16, 2013 at Zoo Miami, 12400 Southwest 152nd Street, Miami, FL 33177 from 10am to 4pm.
11 have been caught so far.
So go, have fun chasing the pythons; don't look for me, I won't be there.
