2013 Python Challenge in the Everglades

The 2013 Python Challenge started Saturday, Jan 12 and continues through February 10. The challenge is being held to help reduce the number of invasive Burmese pythons in the Everglades. Burmese pythons can grow to 26 feet and are native to India, China, and the Malay Peninsula. They can live up to 25 years in the wild; juveniles and eggs are eaten by predators but adults over 8 feet become a problem. For more information on the 2013 Python challenge, click here.

Why a python challenge? The large, established colony is a danger to native wildlife. But, only pythons from the wildlife management areas of  Everglades and Francis S. Taylor, Holey Land, Rotenberger and Big Cypress will be counted.

Burmese Python

The prize for the biggest python is $1,000. The most pythons caught wins a prize of $1,500. The event will  promote awareness of the threat posed by invasive Burmese pythons in south Florida.

The 2013 Python Awareness and Awards Event will be held Feb. 16, 2013 at Zoo Miami, 12400 Southwest 152nd Street, Miami, FL 33177 from 10am to 4pm.

11 have been caught so far.

So go, have fun chasing the pythons; don't look for me, I won't be there.

Toni,

Go figure...I think I'm busy the day of the Python challenge. Maybe if they have one here in Maryland I'll attend.

Toni-That wouldn't be a challenge I would want to attend. Do they kill them or just capture them or both? I can see how they would be a problem. 8' is a very long snake. Wouldn't want to meet one in a dark swamp somewhere.

LOL Fred, I was thinking that too.

Joanna - you wouldn't believe how many people are there.

Cheryl - I don't like the idea of them being killed either, maybe we should ship them to India or whereever they came from. But they are eating our beautiful birds, deer, and our gators. It is a problem.

Randy - I can't imagine what it's like with people running all over. But it is closely monitored by Florida Wildlife.

Dorie - I hope so too for the sake of our native wildlife.  The Everglades is so beautiful and full of creatures.

Beth - aw come on; they are so cute :)

Joan - if that's what floats your boat; go with it! Somebody's gotta do it.

Joni- I have a python reserved just for your eyes only :)

Rich - I'll see what I can do to set one up for you :)

Sharon - I wouldn't want to be in a dark swamp anywhere. I'm not sure what the outcome will be for the pythons but where would they keep them. So things don't look good.

Toni,

What an event, and I am looking forward to the outcome and the python count...it is amazing how many of the creatures are not native to our states and were introduced by people who did not have the brouader perspective.  I am not fond of snakes either, although I respect them!  Ron and I were hiking around Mount Baldy, and saw a rattler ambiling along.  We respectfully ceded the path to him, and headed home, LOL A

Hi Toni,

I saw this on the TV news a couple of days ago and I thought it is a good thing since they are multiplying so fast but you would never see me anywhere near there. Great post and scary picture.

Well Toni....... I will admit I have never heard of the 2013 Python Challenge in the Everglades. They did find one in a home here. A pet I think that was left behind. Glad I wasn't the one that found the thing!

Howdy and evening Toni

Toni my friend, I sure hope there are a lot of Burmese Pythons are caught. If I lived down there, I would take part in the Challenge. But I would not take any prize money.

Have a good one

Kristin - I enjoy the educational too but this one I will do from a distance.

Anita - you're right, it is a serious problem.

Alexandra - I'm amazed too how many non-natives there are. And, they do very often become a problem. Cute rattler tale.

Kristin - I think everyone is voting the same way. Thanks.

John - Many of these are former pets and their offspring. It is a scary sight.

Dale - we'll see what the outcome is. There are a lot of folks heading down there.

Hi Toni.  I acutually like snakes and usually defend them.  They've had a bad reputation since the Garden of Eden, mostly unjustified.  But even I would rather not meet a 26-ft. python, or even on half that long!  Or one-third that long!  Introducing a new species seldom ends well.

Dianne - I don't mind snakes either and don't understand why everyone gets upset when they see one in their gardens --- unless it's one of these :)

Nick - this is a big problem for our Everglades wildlife. They eat a lot.
