Our Small (so far) Flood in Dillsboro Really Put Things in Perspective

You might recall this idyllic scene from a post earlier this year.  This is a portion of Scotts Creek that usually flows gently through the middle of Dillsboro. Nice, huh?

Due to the heavy and extensive rains over the last several days...plus we are predicted to get another 2.67" tonight...Scotts Creek turned into a raging river.  Note how close to the top of the bank the river creek is flowing.  Usually, there is a good 8-10 feet from river creek to the top of the bank.  On the night of the 15th, this river creek overflowed the banks and flooded not only the railroad tracks but flowed onto Front Street and the sidewalks.  Thankfully, it stopped just short of the ramp leading into our beautiful Cannon's Corner.

Nature has everyone confused...for the last week, our temperatures have averaged in the mid 50s, where normally we would see temperatures in the high 30s to high 40s.  As I crossed the footbridge from the town over the river creek to the Office Manager's favorite afternoon walk area, I looked down at one of the bridge supports and spotted this dazed looking water snake.  He or she (who can really tell?) was a good 14-16 inches long.  Don't you know he or she had a hell of a night?

Late in the afternoon today, the DOT sent out a street cleaner to help remove all of the silt and sewage from Front Street.  Hard to believe that was all under water just 12 hours earlier.

All of this really puts into perspective how devastating an event like Hurricane Charlie, Ivan, Katrina or Sandy must be.  This Front Street flood was so minor in comparison but still caused so much mess.  How dare Congress be squabbling over appropriating sufficient funding to help our American families in New York, New Jersey...wherever...regain and reclaim their lives from these natural disasters.  Most of us are supreme masters of robbing Peter to pay Paul in order to keep our lives going.  Don't you think that Congress could operate in the same manner?

We're hoping to find our office nice and dry again tomorrow, but we are so aware that this is nothing in comparison to our neighbors in Bryson City just 20 miles away.  Folks living in little rental singlewide trailers losing everything when the Tuckasegee River flooded its banks.  We're also aware that as devastating as it was for those residents, Bryson City's infrastructure is still in place...the same can't be said for the folks in the NE area of the US.  I hope relief comes to them soon and all I can think is how brave and resilient those folks are as they try to continue to hold their lives together.

Mona ... We feel for you.  Debbie's parents in Northern Alabama have had 8 inches of rain straight and are now bracing for the winter blast on top of all that water.  I think I'll stick the the high desert winter.  Hope you all dry out quickly.

John, we are starting to feel like mushrooms and it is a real drag for the dogs.  8 inches sounds like a nightmare to me.  High desert winters are pretty awesome.

Mona, thought provoking blog.  I hope that your home and office fair well with the expected rain.  In California, we are ill prepared for such high levels of rainfall.  A few years ago, it rainged about 2-3 inches and the drains back up and flooded my first floor condo.  I had to move out for over a month while the restoration and flooring was re-done.  You and Leslie, and the dogs are in my thoughts and prayers.

oh my wowness.  We had rain all day today, but nothing that would cause any flooding.  Hope it's over there and no harm was done.

Lanise, I'd probably be tempted to have a second floor condo!  Thank you for your kind thoughts.

Wowness, Yowza and Shazaam Tammy...unbelieveable amt of rain.  I'm glad you aren't getting any flooding.

Andrea, thank you...the delay in relief for Sandy victims just blows my mind.  Who's tax money is it anyway...the public wants those folks taken care of.

Hi Mona, Quite a wonderful photo documentary of your recent flood. As for the snake, well, he/she sure did look longer than 16 inches, :-)

Good Morning William, if it had been any closer then I probably would have felt the same.  There are some people who would have estimated the snake to be 5 feet long, lol.

Mona, Congress is expert at robbing Peter and not so good at paying Paul. It's government at its finest! Hoepfully, you are staying dry and cleaning up! Enjoy your day!

Mona,  above all else 'Be Safe.'  Water and snakes ~  Ugh!

I can relate to first and second photos as we have Trout Run meandering through our property most of the year, but there are times when it becomes a raging river.  Fortunately I have not seen any snakes or I might be history.  Just deer, turtles, heron, hawks, woodpeckers.

Be Safe!!!!

Wayne, the problem is that the Peter and Paul thing only works when you utilize both.  We are dealing with snow now...crazy weather.

Mary, it is stunning how fierce water gets when it really gets moving.  Maybe there aren't any snakes in NY for you to worry about lol

Valerie, we can't even feel justified in whining while those folks in the NE are in such wretched conditions.
