Jack Frost and Big Boulder are sister ski resorts with plenty of snow bum fun for the whole family. A friend treated me and my daughter Sofia to a day on the slopes and we were off!
Being only four years old, my fearless daughter was nonetheless, intimidated. She worried…could she do it? Would the other kids like her? Would she, heavens forbid, fall??? I assured her everything would be okay, and better yet, scary! And that mommy falls too. The combination proved irresistible.
Getting to Jack Frost 30 minutes early turned out to be—too late. We needed about double that to get our lift tickets, boot and ski rentals, then take Sofia to her 1:00 ski class, aka Snow Monsters. This class required us to be on time. So we heard a little grumbling checking in, then it was out onto the bright white yonder to explore.
Sofia joined ski school with four other children her age and a bit older. There was a simple conveyor for them to ride up the small incline they were learning on. A good place to wave from apparently. Then walking, sliding, moving around—that and the good old downhill pizza ski position ruled the day. My friend and I basked in the cuteness a good long while, then headed out for a thrill ride.
At least for me it was a thrill ride, for my friend it was more like babysitting. Not being very experienced, I wasn’t in love with the intermediate hill we started on. Moving down to the easy-peasy Snowflake and Powderpuff trails, I had a better time working on skills and watching the gorgeous mountain glide on by. So what if the slopes were small? They were aka beautiful.
The day was warm. The snow was a little icy. The food, expensive. But the little Snow Monsters were a picture-taking video-making mom’s dream. After that tiring three-hour escapade, my little ski bunny went home with Grammy and the grown-ups took off for a night ski at Big Boulder.
My friend decided to come down to my level and try her skills on a snowboard. Didn’t last long. Boulder was cold, icy and just plain….ouch! Not the best night to learn snowboarding. Our hysterical advice is to now…wait for the powder. After a few slopes she went back to skis and met up with more friends to hit Boulder View Tavern. I whooped my way down the advanced Bunny’s Elbow and Schuss being chased by a mad snowboarder I had lured to the slopes. He put me to shame, but also put up with me. Way…back…there. Amen for good friends who don’t laugh, too much, when you’re learning.
It turned out to be a most excellently challenging, exhausting, laugh-filled way to kill a Monday. Jack Frost is the day-time part of the pair; open from 9-4 on weekdays, 8-4 on weekends. It’s bigger and offers a lot more trails, with lifts and lodge on top of the mountain. Big Boulder opens at 3 to satisfy the night-flying, trick shtick snow lovers.
