If prostitution was legal, would you use one?

Orlando Property Manager

Hmmm.  Might be a tough question for some, and easier one for others. How about this one: Which path will you take?

Orlando Property Manager

My short answer to the first question is "no". I don't refrain from using prostitutes because it's illegal- I refrain from using them because it's a wrong thing to do. My apologies to all the pimps and ho's out there, but I'll keep my distance from you and your trade. I simply call it "making the right decision".

It seems that more and more, our government wants to step in and be our daddy- protecting us from this and protecting us from that. Well, I need neither government nor law to tell me what's right and wrong- I've figured that stuff out all by myself. I've often said that we can't legislate morality- and were it not such a dangerous topic, I'd find it comical that a Congress unable to pass a budget in 4 years thinks they need to enact new laws to "protect us".

If stealing escrow money wasn't a crime, would you do it? I wouldn't- and it doesn't take a lecture from a president for me to know it's simply another wrong thing to do. You see, we're all born with these "moral compass" things. Granted, some are molded and shaped better than others as we move through life's phases- but I'd say that same compass we have in common at birth remains something we have in common to this very day.

We know right from wrong when we see it.

So what about you? How much of your life (including your business) is led by a moral compass that guides your path- leading you to do what's right because it's right? How many of your decisions are dictated by whether something's legal versus whether it's right? True tragedies from Columbine to Newtown have some pushing for new laws they feel will make our nation safer- ones I feel are unnecessary and pretty dang scary, quite frankly.

I dare say no new laws are necessary, though. We simply need to do a better job of listening to and following our moral compasses- and a better job of evaluating and treating those among us who are unable to do so for themselves.

Dennis in #16:  You are correct.  If prostitution was legal... I would not be one to pay for that service.  I don't think it is wrong, but it is just not my speed... so to speak.

And... I CAN see a "working woman" having an office in Suite 205 of some office building.  I am guessing she would not call her business "Sex Worker..." but perhaps something more marketable... like "Pillow Talk" or something like that.

Also... although if I were pregnant, I would not personally get an abortion (unless my life was in danger)... I would and do fully support the right of every woman to make that choice for herself.

And... this may surprise you... as far as having sex before marriage... when I got married many years ago, we were both "virgins" and we both prided ourselves knowing that.  I do not agree currently with having sex before marriage... I don't care what anyone says.  BUT... I still totally support the right of everyone to make that choice for themselves.

I guess you might say I would make "conservative choices" for myself, but would fully support whatever choice a woman would want... in those situations.  Here, in America, they call that "Freedom."

I will just say that morals are almost gone in American one only has to turn on the TV for less than 3 minutes is what it just took be before a commercial for some Double Diva garbage came on.

That being what it is, we have just about given all control to the government just 1 more little step here or there.

We worry about guns and kids but we legalize marijuana, we now have marriage for all, next will be some nut wanting to marry his dog or SHEEP and why not if it makes him happy. Just a few weeks back someone overseas wanted to marry her pet so she could legally leave everything to her.

We cry when a few kids are killed at school but no one cries as thousands of babies are killed by abortion  and a few doctors.

There is no Prostitution allowed in Vegas by the way. It's also not allowed in Reno. Five counties don't allow it in Nevada. Just want to clear that up so no one comes here and gets into any trouble.

Charles, I guess there has to be ONE person who needs to throw in the baloney about how the next step will be marrying your dog, or a sheep... and I gues it was your turn.

By the way, you started to introduce about babies being "killed" by abortion.  That cannot happen.  Until actual birth takes place, we are talking about either a zygote or a fetus.  After birth is completed and the then-birthed infant is existing on its own, it is a baby-person.  Sure, it could then be killed, but the act of doing that could not be called an abortion.  After it is born... makes all the difference.

Here is an article that you might add to your knowledge base:

The Bible Tells Us When A Fetus Becomes A Living Being

I would love to hear your reaction to it.

[Thanks Dennis]

Hi, Rob:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  I had a long reply that got blown away when my app crashed- doing this on the phone!  In short, though, there are but a few responsibilites we need to rely upon our government for:  building/maintaining roads, police and fire departments, national defense.  Not the case now- as government now tells us which light bulbs we're allowed to use, toilets we're allowed to flush in our homes, gas mileage our cars must get as they roll along as fast as the government allows.

MLK is a bit of a sore spot for me- as I've always been of the opinion that he gets far more credit than he deserves for any successes of the Civil Rights movement. He wrote his famous Letter from the Birmingham Jail- though he never really wanted to come, etc. It was Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, for example, that took a lot of beatings and had his home bombed no less than 3 times as he worked to ensure his kids were the ones to integrate our schools. While King had the spotlight, Shuttlesworth and others struggled in his shadow.

Hi, Karen Anne:  #21:  Thank you for stopping by again, and for your continued interest in the discourse here.  I can surely understand and appreciate the Conservative side of things as well as the Liberal side- and unless we want...yikes...the government to step in and "help" us decide which viewpoint we'll adopt.  The way I see it, though, I'd have a hard time living one side of things while finding it all well and good to tread the opposite path.

Hi, Charles:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  I'm a bit confused, though- are you referring to women having that God-given right to deal with their "problems" as they see fit?  Seriously, though, we have gotten dangerously close to flat-out losing our country. Where our Founding Fathers left their mother land to both seek individual freedom and guarantee it for their fellow man, the government of today is one that places little value on personal responsibility at all- and the only real nod toward freedom goes to the freedom many have to eschew their responsibilities while the rest of America takes up the slackers' slack

Hi again, Karen Anne #24:  Thank you for your continued interest.  I guess we'll just have to disagree on this point...or agree to have divergent opinions...or... Anyway, I go along with and ascribe to the teachings and beliefs of my church and our Southern Baptist Convention:  conception  creates a life and that life needs to be preserved regardless how "inconvenient" that might be.

Dennis, I understand and admire that you are strong in your belief system.

The link I put in my comment box #24 leads to a series of Bible passages that very plainly address when a fetus is considered a person, and when not.

Some of the passages refer to exactly when the Holy Spirit "breathes" life and a soul into the fetuses.

Did you actually read the passage I linked to, and did you look up the biblical passages and read them as well?  I would love to hear your individual responses.

And... you are welcome.

Dennis, thanks for an excellent post. Than reblogged it on spiritualrain so here I am. The older I get the more I realize how out of touch I am with the world. What is right and wrong does not change but the people's acceptance of wrong for right.

Good points Dennis. With martyrs like MLK and JFK, you never quite know how history would have reflected on them if they were not killed off early. Kind of like how history looks at Marilyn Monroe versus Elizabeth Taylor. I'm generally of the opinion that less government is a good thing. Having been to several foreign countries though, I realize that the Libertarian view of the world can quick turn things into the Wild Wild West. I remember when we were in the Dominican Republic a few years back and my daughter got some food poisoning. I had big concerns about the credentials of the doctor that treated her - I didn't see any diplomas or licenses on the wall and I wondered just how much the doctor knew about anything. And the bartender at the hotel was telling me how he listed and sold real estate on the side - no license required.

Hi, Karen Anne:  Thank you again for your comment, kind words and continued interest.  I hadn't read the entire piece in your link the other day, but I have done so now.  I'm going to discuss this a bit in church Sunday and return with a longer comment Sunday afternoon.  Don't want to simply fire off a quick comment this late at night and without a bit more thought!

Hi, Rob:  Thank you for stopping by again, and for your comment.  It is a funny thing how Marilyn, James Dean and others are portrayed- they'll live on forever and be forever young.  What a concept.  Same can be said for the ones we lost young due to drugs and plane crashes:  Joplin, Morrison and Hendrix are forever 27, Buddy Holly will never see 23 and Lynyrd Skynyrd will never be the same without Ronnie Van Zant.  Guess the closest modern-day comparison would be Kurt Cobain and all the folks that wonder "What if..."

Interesting about the doctor, license, etc.  As with any number of things, even if he'd had documents, they'd only have been as good as their source.  Tons of folks get online degrees that are worthless because the schools they get them from are "allegedly" shady.  And our government can verify someone is legally entitled to live here work here based on a driver's license, etc.- but even that legitimate document can be misleading if it resulted from a scoundrel using a forged/fake source document to acquire it.

Not that that happens or anything.....just sayin'...

Hi Dennis,

I come from a fairly strict home and I grew up not questioning why or what would happen if I broke the rules (I don't mean prostitution but just any thing that was against the law or morally wrong). I have lived my life that way pretty much after my teenage years and to this day still follow the rules. I follow the letter of the law and never have lived in the gray area. If they made marijuana legal tomorrow, I would not be smoking it. We have to be morally fit as we have to answer to a higher power someday. If I did something wrong, I would be looking behind worried that someone would find out. But of course there are many people in this world who do not live that way and do not care. Very sad.

No I would not.  I am a bit of a libertarian without being a libertine.  I think cities and states need to decide what type of laws they will have, but a people need a strong moral code (say maybe the Bible) to follow.

Hi, Kristin:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your commnet...and my apologies for a belated follow-up.  I've known a lot of folks that have lived their lives without concern for any moral code at all- only to arrive at death's doorstep with a ton of regrets.  Interesting, isn't it, that one never hears of folks living long, worthwhile and prodcutive lives that arrive at the same spot wishing they'd lived their lives another way.

Hi, Gene:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  Agreed with respect to jurisdictions setting their own laws and enforcing them (I'll leave my states' rights argument for another day)- and I also agree that The Bible's code should always trump any municipal ones...

Hi Dennis:  Just wondering if you ever took those verses in the link in #24 to church as you said, in your comment #33?  If not, that's ok.  I was just very interested in what those in your congregation, or your minister, might have had to say.
