CAPE CORAL

Cape Coral is a city, which was built to resemble Venice on the Gulf. From the earliest days, Cape Coral's man made canal system has played a key role in its marvelous growth and development. Cape Coral is Lee County's largest city and Florida's second largest city after Jacksonville. Cape Coral welcomed its 100,000th resident on August 10, 2000. Cape Coral was developed by Leonard and Julius Rosen. They   promoted a place of endless sunshine where young families and industry could thrive alongside each other. A bountiful nature provided the ideal site. It was wild, wet and crawling. It had dense mangrove forests, pine flat woods, a lot of broad, vegetated canals (flows or streams),    alligators and rattlesnakes.  In spite of this, Leonard had quoted "there will be a great city here some day". There are miles of deep, wide, navigable canals now... and surprisingly; all this was accomplished without sacrificing any of the native charm and the virgin beauty of the magnificent tropical setting.

Currently, 76 percent of all housing units are single family homes. Between now and 2020 city officials estimate 40,000 more housing units will be needed to meet the expected demand. After the tremendous growth in the Southeast area of the city, the Southwest is now the fastest growing section of the city. Even the far Northwest section has seen considerable growth in the last two years. Most of the growth has come in the last ten years. The Northeast section of the city has still to grow and has the potential of becoming the commercial center in the area.

There are as many as 30 parks in Cape Coral. The Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve is a 365-acre saltwater wetland just north of Veterans Memorial Highway. The preserve features a 4,200-ft. nature trail, Visitor's Center, and canoe and kayak rentals are available on weekends from October through May. Located off Beach Parkway overlooking the Caloosahatchee River is the Beach Park. Residents and visitors can take a leisurely stroll through Eco Park on the 3 mile boardwalk, or the Cape Coral Yacht Club Fishing Pier. Other Cape Coral parks include Jaycee, Four Freedoms and Veterans Park. There are many open spaces, playgrounds and grill facilities. Sun Splash is a water park and is a popular attraction for area residents and visitors to Southwest Florida. For history lovers, the Cape Coral Historical Society Museum, located at 544 Cultural Park Boulevard is open 3 days a week and offers exhibits and video of early Cape Coral.

One can see armadillos, box turtles, bobcat, coyotes, bald eagles, burrowing owls and foxes. Even the endangered Florida Panther has been occasionally spotted in the extreme west Cape and on the north banks of the Caloosahatchee River. This is the country that Ponce de Leon encountered as he sailed along the Florida coast.  Although people of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life make up the community, the people of Cape Coral have one characteristic in common - the love of nature and quiet. Come and visit Cape Coral. You will be more than surprised! Cape Coral is a place worth living in and relocating to, today and in the future.
