'New Urbanism' a New Wave on Texas Coast

New Urbanism - just what is this? It's a way of planning cities and new developments so they have more of that traditional neighborhood feel.

Newurbanismcommunity Walking and biking is big in New Urban development. Instead of the old suburban car culture, where we all drive everywhere, even down the block, a "new urban" neighborhood is one where you're tempted to leave the car in the driveway since you can easily walk to shops, restaurants, and schools.

This sounds better and better, the higher the gas prices set in!

But anyway, what's this got to do with the Texas Coast? Quite a bit, it turns out. Developer Tofigh Sherazi is currently underway with plans for Beachtown Galveston, a 260 acre community meant to reflect Galveston's past.

Dee   That looks pretty cool.  I really like how Austin has small grocery stores in the different neighborhoods.

Hi Dee, New urbanism has been on the rise in Summerville & Charleston SC for the past few years and it has caught on like wildfire.  More and more builders are structuring their communities with grocery stores, shopping etc. all within walking distance for their homeowners.  People either love the close proximity (to both their neighbors and shopping) or hate it.  Enough are loving it though.  Best of luck in Austin.

I wrote a blog on New Urbanism a few months ago. I am glad to see that there are pockets of New Urbanism springing up all over. It is nice to have a "neighborhood" feeling.

John and Foster, thanks for commenting. I represent the City of Austin for the Mueller Austin community and things are going very well. I'm pro new urbanism, but do agree that it's kind of expensive even with affordable products intermixed. I'd love to read your articles on this!

Emily, thank you for the request. I'm actually moving my current blog to a Joomla or Wordpress site that will have more details on Mueller Austin and others. I'll write about the new blogcast here when it's ready for launch!
