As I Recall

By
Real Estate Agent with Crown Key Realty

Martin Luther King was assassinated (murdered) in 1968. I was a junior in an all white high school at the time. His assassination was thought provoking and an interesting topic of discussion for several days. We talked about what he had accomplished, the motivation for his assassination and how he would be remembered.

My girl friend at the time, was a junior in another high school that was a near equal mix of black and white. It was, according to her much different there. While there was similar discussions she said that in the hallways there was great fear of violence. From her point of view she feared retribution for his death. Turned out that nothing serious happened for which she was very thankful.

In retrospect, Mr. King turned out to be nearly as influential in death as in life. His method of non violent peaceful protest continued and in many ways America was changed for the better. His legacy lives on today and we celebrate his life one day each year. There are many men and women that like Mr. King helped change America for the better, and we would all be better if we remembered them each day and not just one day.

Dale -- interesting take on what happened, as based on your recall from those two different viewpoints.  Unfortunately, it seems there are some, in every group who do not want to move forward on their merits, and would rather complain -- it would be so much better if we could just view each based on their character.

Steven, the world would be unrecognizably better if people would adapt that view point. If John Lennon was still with us he might write another song about it.

Hi Dale, In 1968, I was 8 years old, so all of the civil right demonstrations as well as Vietnam went well over my head as it should. As an adult, I'm thankful for those like MLK Jr. that were brave enough to put there lives on the line for change.

Dale, it's nice that there was no violence at her school. Sadly, if it happened today there would be riots everywhere and who knows how much violence breaking out.

Connie you are likely correct. People who challenge at the level he did are often assassinated, and the assassination is often followed by violence. Funny how violence become a justification for violence isn't it?

I was 9 years old in 68 and remember the day Rev. King Jr. was murdered. I was living in New York City and even though NYC had it share of racial issues it wasn't as bad as many other places.

I remember my great grandparents trying to explain to me that if we could just learn to see each other for whom we are and not for the color of our skin 90% of the violence would be eliminated. I think we're making big strives in that department, but we have a long, long way to go.

Times have changed and there is still much to be done. I was in college in 68 but remember this incident well.
