Martin Luther King was assassinated (murdered) in 1968. I was a junior in an all white high school at the time. His assassination was thought provoking and an interesting topic of discussion for several days. We talked about what he had accomplished, the motivation for his assassination and how he would be remembered.
My girl friend at the time, was a junior in another high school that was a near equal mix of black and white. It was, according to her much different there. While there was similar discussions she said that in the hallways there was great fear of violence. From her point of view she feared retribution for his death. Turned out that nothing serious happened for which she was very thankful.
In retrospect, Mr. King turned out to be nearly as influential in death as in life. His method of non violent peaceful protest continued and in many ways America was changed for the better. His legacy lives on today and we celebrate his life one day each year. There are many men and women that like Mr. King helped change America for the better, and we would all be better if we remembered them each day and not just one day.
