Do Medications Really Expire??

January 2013

 pill picture

I don't think so!!

I read this great article  Do Medications Really Expire? by Richard Altschuler and wanted to share.  I always believed that the expiration dates meant nothing but am thrilled to see I was right!  Expiration dates have been required by law since 1979 and are there to guarantee full potency and safety of the drug - not if the drug is "good" anymore.

Studies have showed that the potency of the drugs changes very little over time.  Many medical authorities state that it is safe to take pills for years after the expiration date on the pill bottle, with few exceptions.  Companies who manufacture medications benefit from these expiration dates, they sell more bottles of pills and often repackage their products.

This is an article here to share information I found exciting to share - nothing to do with real estate....  just your lives.

I wonder how this applies to vitamins?  I have no problem taking expired tylenol and aspirin, but I wonder about some vitamins.

I had asked my doctor about this years ago.  He'd told me they begin to loose strength shortly after the "date", but were still good.  I have some pills from years ago that still work.

Dagny, I think the information could be right for the more straight forward meds, but I'd be concerned that the good well beyond expiration date might not hold true for some of the more complex medications being produced via complex chemical synthesis or biochemical engineering.  I know old Chloraseptic spray doesn't cause the same numbness as a fresh bottle does for me.  Bill

Bliz. I also am under the impression that it is solid pills, not liquids that last. The liquids do not last long. They are too unstable.

Dagny, Makes sense.  Liquid breaks down with light exposure, temperature swings, etc. :)

Dagny you mean I did not have to get rid of all those pills? So next time my husband tells me to throw things out I will reference your post :)

Have a great weekend.

Dagny, that makes me feel better about a bottle I found in the bottom of my desk drawer. Now if I can only remember what it was for

Robert - I never throw out solid pills - I find they still work years later!

Bill - Good one!

Jennifer - I don't know, but would assume the same would hold true....   solid lasts as long as they are not exposed to high heat or extreme cold.

Tammy - most seem to be fine.

Jennifer - Don't throw them out, but be protective of them - careful with the kids around...

Ed - :)

Dagny, I came over from Ginny's endorsement post on you. She really sang your praises. This post on medications is good information that needs to get out so I am going to re-blog it. I am glad that I got to meet you.

Thanks so much!    You are so sweet - the medications thing is something that has always bothered me, because it is such a scam on the pharmaceutical industry's part.....

Dagny, I've suspected that for a long time that the expiration date really only benefits the manufacturers and drug stores.

Silvia - Now we can enjoy knowing that there is no reason to fear the expiration date.   Wonder about other things, like preserves, etc?

Joy - Glad you enjoyed!

I am notorious for taking pills long past their expiration.  For something life threatening, I would never take the chance, however for a painkiller or common antibiotic, I have no problem with it.
