 Red Hawks- Birds of Prey

I am Watching...Always Watching

Hawks are carnivores (meat eaters) that belong to the category of birds known as raptors -- birds of prey. They have strong, hooked beaks; their feet have three toes pointed forward and one turned back; and their claws, or talons, are long, curved and very sharp. The hawk's vision is much better than humans. They can see spiders and beetles from afar. Hawks can see a mouse from a height of one mile.

I am Watching...Always WatchingThe adult has a rufous colored tail that may or may not have a black terminal bar. Adults are dark brown on the back and the top of their wings. The Red-tail is the largest hawk, usually weighing between 2 and 4 pounds. As with most raptors, the female is nearly 1/3 larger than the male and may have a wing span of 56 inches.

The Red-tailed Hawk ranges throughout North America to the central Alaska and northern Canada, and south as far as the mountains of Panama. Although not truly migratory, they do adjust seasonally to areas of the most abundant prey. In California, red hawks are abundant and rarely migrate in winter.

The Red-tailed Hawk has extremely keen eyesight and can often be seen perching in a tree at the edge of a meadow, watching for the slightest movement in the grass below. Prey is killed with the long talons.

The areas of San Bernardino/ Riverside Counties have many areas of wildlife to enjoy. It is a lovely area to live in, to retire at, or just to be near to the OC, Mountains or Deserts.

Hi Erna,

I know.....I was very lucky. I was just coming home and there he was. So I pulled over and took about 10 photos. Apparently he/she saw something to grab so it flew off never to be seen again. But it sat there so perfectly and posed. I felt so lucky.

Hi Don, I love to watch the red hawks in our area and when they swoop down for prey, it just amazes me how great their eyesite and aim is. I like to watch all the predator birds and we have owls too. Big owl in my yard this morning as I could hear the 'who who who' but couldn't find it. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Than, When I was writing this post I found the mention of how far..like 1 mile vision. There was some discussion about the hawk grabbing the prey and what they did with it but I thought it was just to vivid and gross to put on my blog. I thought I might gross someone out. I did read where they have a bone above the eye socket so when the hawk is sitting perfectly still, it needs to turn its head to search as it doesn't have the peripheral vision like humans do.

Hi Connie, I think they are so fascinating to watch too. I live near a really woodsy area so they like to hang around the trees looking for dinner. I had an owl this morning but couldn't find it but could hear him hooting; is that a verb? I read somewhere that owls and hawks are the most popular photographed birds in the world.

Hi Patty,

I have read where they will sit still for an hour or more to find something to swoop down on. He never moved except tho turn his head right, middle. and left. But then something caught his eye and he was gone. He didn't come back so he must have been successful.

Hi Tony,

Yes I usually get them in the tress up 400 feet or more and wrapped inside branches so it was great to get a dead on shot of him with my camera. I felt very lucky. I just kept shooting pics as I was using my older camera and you never know how they might mess up. Luckily they were all perfect.

Kristin, we occaisionally have a hawk in our back yard. I've never gotten a great photo like yours!  Love the blue-sky backdrop!! When Mr. hawk shows up, all the sparrows take off!

Hi Sonia, I never noticed that before but I guess the backyard birds hide in the trees. About a month ago, one cloudy morning a huge owl was sitting on the fence. I ran to grab my calendar and poof....he was gone. Then about 30 minutes later a falcon showed up on the other side of the yard on the fence so they must be watching for critters to run under the discarded bird seed. I got a blurry pic and then he took off. Never have seen either of them again so some other day. But getting the hawk to pose for me was a real blessing.
