What else would you use coffee grounds for? Any ideas?

We wake up, brew that first pot of coffee and inhale that wonderful aroma. We settle in for the day while sipping away.  When we’re done, down the drain go the remains.  But, not so quick!  There’s a multitude of uses for the coffee, the grounds and the coffee filters.  The Canyon Creek Reporter just published a list that may surprise you.

Add this to my post from January of 2010 on 25 Ways That Coffee Filters Can Become Your New Best Friend and we’ve got quite a list!  Let us know if you’ve got something to add to the list.

  • Closets smelling a little musty?  Grind up some coffee beans very fine, pour onto a plate and set it on the top shelf of the closet for a day or two.
  • You can pour coffee into puddles of water to kill mosquito larvae.
  • Mix in coffee grounds with your seeds when planting in the spring. Gives them a boost.
  • The caffeine in coffee increases the potency of any insecticide.  Use it instead of water in any bug killing soap spray.
  • Sprinkle dried coffee grounds around plants to repel slugs & cutworms.
  • Use coffee filters between fragile china plates.
  • Keep a coffee filter in each cast iron skillet to absorb moisture & prevent rust.
  • Ball up a coffee filter to apply shoe polish or any kind of leather cleaner.
  • Use coffee filters to catch drips from ice pops.  Poke a hole in filter & insert stick.

I was not aware of some of the uses. I used to use to put them into my compost bin and eventually in my garden. Some of the other uses are new for me.

Thank you for the education lesson today.

Dorie, We make a bunch of trips to Starbucks throughout the year to get huge bags of used coffee grounds for our azaleas.  Some Starbucks even have a special can with the bags of them ready to go, and it's free :)
