There’s no place quite like Northern Virginia. With a rich cultural heritage and a wealth of activities for every season, there’s no reason to slow down just because the temperature drops.

On the weekend of January 26-27 at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, celebrate Bobbie Burns with A Festival of Scotland. On Saturday from 10am to 6pm, enjoy a bagpipe and drumming master class, Scottish country dancing demonstrations and open social dancing. Highland games and crafts for kids, exhibits of authentic crafts and goods for sale, a Scotch Whisky master class with Dougie Wylie ($35 per person, includes festival admission), and full afternoon tea ($35 per person, includes festival admission) are other activities available that day. General admission is $15 for adults and $5 for children. Then, on Sunday at 4pm in Merchant Hall, enjoy the Black Watch and Band of the Scots Guards, along with the Pipes, Drums and Highland Dancers of the 1st Battalion. At 6:30 pm, there will be a Burns Night Supper in the Gregory Family Theatre featuring a special performance by Scottish fiddler, Bonnie Rideout, and a menu that includes a special presentation of the national dish, haggis. Tickets may be purchased on the event web site.

On that same weekend, the Sugarloaf Crafts Festival kicks off on Friday, January 25th and runs through Sunday, January 27th at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly. More than 250 top artisans will display and sell their creations, and also demonstrate their arts. There will be live music from the Potomac Jazz Project, and Ngu Mbandi. There will also be special entertainment for children including costumed storytelling from Middle Earth, and specialty gourmet food for sampling and purchase. Parking is free, and tickets can be purchased online at the event web site.

Every day you can glide through the season at any number of ice skating venues found only here in the region. In Washington, you can skate in the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden, meander through Canal Park on its frozen waterways, or enjoy Washington Harbor’s 11,800 square foot rink that doubles as a fountain in the warmer months. On the Virginia side, the rink at Pentagon Row on South Joyce St. is open every day including all holidays.

We should appreciate the high of 74 today, considering the really cold temps in midwest and north east area.
