Melinda Peterson - LibrocubicularistI'm becoming a Librocubicularist!  Yep... I pulled that one out of my ear (stay tuned for more magic tricks).  As for the picture... well, it does look a little like me these days ;-)

I've been sick with the flu for weeks and laying in bed with zero energy. I needed to get some fresh air, so my daughter sent me to the .99 cent store to pick-up some last minute items for my grand-daughter's 4th birthday party.  I confess, I've never been to the .99 cent store... so I anticipated a PeopleOfWalmart experience.  I was delightfully surprised instead!

I was stunned to learn that the .99 cent store has a robust produce section as well as other name brand products priced well below  regular retail stores.  I decided to look for an eye-glass repair kit, which I've searched high and low for everywhere to no avail.  I found one and bought three... I was so excited!  Then I started thinking about other ways to save in 2013.

When I got home, I cancelled my DirectTV.  I don't watch much TV anyway, so it won't be a huge loss to rid myself of the gazillion channels they offer at a whopping price of $996. per year (frankly, I had no idea I was paying that much).  Next on my list... the ole' home phone.  It's a relic and it's costing me more than a plane ticket to Hawaii... who knew!

Last, but not least... I'm x-ing Top Producer.  I rarely use the program anymore, except to store my business contacts for at a hefty price tag of $360. per year.  I keep asking myself... 'What's the Dealio... Why haven't I paid more attention to this stuff?'  I'm wide awake now... reading in bed (becoming a Librocubicularist)... and filling my head with all sorts of ways to save big in 2013!  The flu has its benefits ;-)

Great post. It's a great idea to just go unplugged every so often, no TV or phone, and just sit back relax, read, and enjoy some peace and quiet

This is a funny post.  Made me chuckle.  We got rid of our land line and cable a LONG time ago.  We  just never used either.  Hope you get to feeling better soon!

Yeah, that's not what I thought that word meant ... glad you defined it.  I'm a Librocubicularist too.

I thought I was good at controlling expenses, and getting great deals, but I've learned more about that from my college-age daughters in the last few years than I ever thought possible!

Mel, although the flu has given you an opportunity to do a lot of thinking about cutting expenses and catching up on your reading, get better soon. You're the only person who saves money by getting the flu. lol Wishing you well!

Mel. You definitely found the best way to make the start of a New Year a thrifty, economical one, despite being sidelined with the flu. You turned it all into something quite positive and we all benefitted by learning a cool new word.:) Hope you're back to health and vitality now!

Mel, I hope you are feeling better, the flu is not fun, but if you are able to read, that is a benefit.  We use the dollar store here and have for a long time.  I am amazed what you can get there for a dollar.  My daughter-in-law had a baby shower last month and the gift bags in the store were no less than 4-5 dollars, I went to the dollar store and got a bag that was even better for a dollar.  We watch a lot of news so keep the cable but it is expensive and if your home phone is not on it it is no less expensive.  There must be a better way.  We are still thinking of disposing of that.  We have internet which what we have to have and it is part of the cable system.

Synchronicity! Me too! I'm not only getting rid of a lot of stuff taking up room, I'm unplugging from services like you that no longer really serve me. I confess, I'm also a librocubicularist, and instead of watching tv, I'll watch TED talks and vlogs on my iPad (in bed)... What would that be called, a librocubiculipadist?

Mel ~ I hope you are feeling better.   Sometimes I find myself buying more than I need in the dollar stores because of the bargains.

Mel, about the only thing I watch on TV is NCIS (not the LA version) and news...even the news is getting to be too much blah, blah, blah!  I actually cut back last year on cable and really haven't missed it...besides, who has time for all that...it's all I can do to keep up with business and when I do have a few moments I'd rather be out on my Harley!

Mel, sorry to double dip here, but I remembered your People of Walmart comment...argh!...they are devoted.  I think I've only been in a Walmart a handful of time and was forced into into it!

Still cannot prenounce it but anywho, just out of curosity what database will you use. Also if you get rid of your landline, Prisoners and folks in jail cannot get a hold of you as you cannot accept collect calls on a cell phone HEHE just is case a friend gets arrested and trys to call.
