Clear The Clutter and Get A Fresh Start in 2008! Your Garage

jpegAs I continue my series on Clearing the clutter from your home, we can't forget about the garage. For many of us our garages become a pace for storage as well as a home for our cars. When organized well our garage can accommodate Many seasons of decorations and childhood items and collectibles that we can't seem to part with. The problem begins when we are no longer able to park our cars in the garage and the "storage items" take over.

If your garage is attached to your home, the overcrowding of your garage could even be a fire hazard, not to mention unsightly if friends or potential buyers peak into your garage. Also if your hot water heater breaks or your washing marching leaks you could be in for a lot of damage. My suggestion is to attempt to pack your garage as neatly as possible with the plastic containers that are now very affordable.  Installing a drop down stairway and enclosing your garage attic space also greatly helps. If you are past these remedies and you need to gain access to your garage or show your home for sale, just get a storage unit for the items you rarely need to access. Actually paying to store these items may help you reconsider haw valuable they really are to you. In the process you may be able to eliminate those old treasures you really don't need and retain a small off site storage.

If you are preparing your home for sale, just think positively.  You are basically packing these items for the short term since  you will be moving in the near future. Hopefully the new home you purchase will have more storage or a larger garage so that you may be able to once again fit you cars in your garage.

Tina, this is funny. In Arizona - where it is very hot during the summer - and people buy homes with three car garages? Yep, you guessed it, their cars are sitting outside. Is that crazy or what? We park both of our cars inside, but need to do a bit of rearranging on the third car portion. ;-)

We have a 2 car garage.  My car barely fits inside.  Hubby's car stays in the driveway.  It's actually one of my pet peeves. No matter how often we clean it out, it stays a mess.  Maybe it's time for a professional organizer????

Thanks for the reminder that the mess may pose a fire hazard.

Tina, one of the funniest things about Americans is that we buy fancy houses with two or three car garages and fancy expensive cars, yet we load up the garages with worthless junk and park the expensive cars on the driveway for everyone to see.
