9 News did a story on this growing problem tonight.

There are just not enough pet friendly apartments or rental properties to absorb all the families with pets who are losing their homes. Unfortunately, many pet owners don't know where to turn or are embarassed to ask for help when they can no longer keep their animals.

Anyone who finds themself unable to care for their pet(s) should take them to a local animal shelter or contact a rescue group. Generally, a pet owner isn't required to give details about the reasons for relinquishing their animal(s). Some organizations also have anonymous drop off facilities.

Petline9 has assembled a list of animal shelters and rescue groups:

Shannon, I heard this on the local news down here in Southern Colorado as well. It is such a problem, and it's heart breaking. The other thing I don't notice much, but on occasion is empty pools at foreclosure homes. The are a safety hazard not to mention the bugs.
