Welcome To Your New Home - Here's A Few First Day Move In Tips

door locks

Change all the locks and deadbolts, every one of them. You never know who may have had keys to the sellers home over the years...relatives, friends, contractors.

water faucet

Find the main water shut off valve and clearly mark it for quick identification. You do not want to be looking all over for it in a water leak emergency.

smoke detector

Locate all your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. If your home inspector did not tell you, call your fire department and ask how many and where they should be placed. Put new batteries in all the detectors. The anniversary of your home purchase will be easy to remember to replace them, or maybe January 1 of every year.

light bulb

Replace any burned out light bulbs, check outdoor flood lights and porch lights for missing bulbs. Use a small night light to check receptacles that may be in need of replacement. Poor lighting can be a safety hazard.

electrical panel

Find your electrical panel and know how to turn off the main power in case of emergency. Make sure your breakers are labeled and if not, get them labeled properly. Do not touch any wires in the box and do not attempt to do any electrical work yourself, call an electrician.

emergency

Post all emergency phone numbers where everyone in the family knows where they are, including police, fire, ambulance, hospital, poison control, veteranarian and a close neighbor.

cleaning supplies

Assemble containers for cleaning supplies and place them strategically in the rooms that you will need them. This will save you time looking through packed boxes for them

bathroomAlso get some travel size personal care items and place near sinks and in bathrooms. Yours may be packed and hard to find right away. This will save you time and stress looking for them.
