I realize that this topic may be a hot button issue for many people who feel quite passionately about the State of our Union and the President who determines foreign policy.  I welcome discussion on this topic as long as the commentary is respectful.  As the writer of this post, I feel it appropriate to let you know that if a comment has any expletives or hateful speech, I will remove it from this blog.  Again, please do feel free to leave your opinion, even if they differ from the ones offered here.  It is after all, what makes America -- America.  :)

Our Flag

While many dislike the current President and his policies, I offer one very simple point to all of us.

I care about policy, and I care about actions.  I care about our fiscal issues and our social issues.  Though I align more with the Republican ideal than not, many of my dearest friends fall more into line with the Democratic line of logic.

On Monday, President Bush gave his final State of the Union.  While this last year of a President's term is often called the Lame Duck Presidency, he did not seem sad or sentimental.  He clearly recognized that he was out of the limelight and that the attention was now being focused on the new candidates.

While I sat and watched his speech, one thought stood out to me.  Whether right or wrong, no matter which side of the political world we are one -- he has remained consistent.  I realize that some think of his personality as stubborn.  However, I would argue that he stands by his convictions.  I believe that our President (whom I disagree with on some things) has always done what he thinks is best and is right.  President Bush has not ever been one to cower in a corner.  Although he has been attacked (and sometimes rightfully so), he remains the same.

President Bush

Personally, I am not all that pleased with the candidates on wither side of the fence for this upcoming election and term.  While I care about many different issues, I must say that one very simple thing I will be watching is the records that the two final candidates present.  Have they remained true to their convictions?  Have they stood for what is right?  Even in the face of adversity?  I want someone who will not move too much with the wind of public opinion.  Flexibility is important, and in some ways I wish that President Bush would be more "flexible".  At the very least, though...I can admire him.  I can respect him for the fact that he makes no apologies for his beliefs and convictions.  He stands and weathers the storms, resting in the fact that he can lay his head down at night (probably for a very few hours) knowing that he did his best.

I live my life that way -- I run my business that way, and as I result, I would expect that of my leader.

I will be watching, reading, writing, and paying very close attention in the next nine months!  :)

I can tell you that except for one candidate in either party, the economy is going into be in for one rough ride. If Obama or Hillary are elected, runaway spending and corporate tax hikes will be on their way. That means less expansion and a slower economy.  Then you have McCain on the Republican side, I'm still waiting to hear something that convinces me he knows whats going on in terms of economic issues.

Sarah, what a toughtful and respectful blog about our president. I agree with you in that although I feel he,s done some boneheaded things he stands by his words, he stands by his friends , family and associates and he is an honorable man.

One thing that awes me about the stat of the union is the way the democrats and republicans react to the message... sometimes applauding in unison and, at other times, glowering at the opposing party. It just seems odd to me.

Karl ~  Thanks for your thoughts.  I am inclined to agree with you that the Democratic candidates will increase both taxes and spending.  Historically that is the case.  Interestingly enough, I am not so sure that Mr. McCain will be much better in that regard.

Hugh ~  Yes, I do try to put thought into politics.  Sadly, to me anyway...too many people run off of emotion or straight party lines.  You are precisely right...President Bush has done some pretty off things.  No one will argue that.  You are also correct that he stands by what he says.  I am glad that you came by and commented!  Have a great day...

Chuck ~  You are right about that!  My husband and I were watching the speech together (and the reactions of those in the audience).  My husband was pointing out that the country is so clearly divided.  It is interesting to me that the Congress has a lower approval rating than the President by close to half.  President Bush is at 32% currently.  And Congress is only at 18%.  In this regard, the State of our Union is particularly sad.  Thank you for commenting!

Sarah:

You have made some strong points.  Bush has kept his positions without wavering.  I haven't agreed with him on many of his positions because my blood is real conservative.

As for McCain, Everyone should love him because he will have everyone's opinion at some point in time.  If he disagrees with your views today, he might agree with your views tomorrow.

The Dems are for Socialism.  This means tax and spend, class envy and more tax and spend.

The Dems will work hard to dismantle our military.  I am very concerned about a quick pull out in Iraq.  This is not a good strategy for our National defense.

The G.O.P has lost its way and may lose the election because of it.  They cannot win the election without the conservatives.

Obama is still wet behind the ears but he is about as left winged as they come.  Uncle Teddy endorsed him.  He didn't get that endorsement for being conservative.

Speaking of endorsements, Arnold for McCain.  That speaks volumes.  Arnie is to the left of many Democrats.

Back to Bush.  Does anyone believe him regarding the earmark vetos?  I didn't know he had a veto pen.  I hope he uses it.  I don't think we could have had a better  president in office for the war against terrorism than George W. Bush.

Bill ~  I like most of your points, and thanks for your comment.  As for Bush and his vetoes...I hope he vetoes those items that he said he would.  Whether or not the Congress can override them is a different story.  I just like it when someone stands by what they say they will do.  Thanks for your thoughts, Bill!  :)

I second Bill, there is not another man who would have done a better job in protecting America as George W. Bush.

Hi Nicholas ~  Thanks for your comment.  I agree with you both and many others in that President Bush was and is a great protector of this county.  No one can argue that.  Even most of my Democrat friends said they were glad he was in office rather than Gore on 9/11.

When I saw the title I thought it would be a post about the State of Our Union as Realtors.

So many people are talking about the damage of the sub-prime fiasco to the ecomomy and the foreclosure rates.  No one is talking about the damage that has been done to our business as a result of this and that Realtors/Lenders are loosing their homes as well.

Just the other day I read a blog about a Realtor who was loosing his home and he had a pay-pal account set up for Realtors to help if they could.

There is no stimulus package for us, no un-employment, some have gotten part-time jobs, others are leaving this business altogether.

The State of our Union ........ does anybody in politics care?

President Bush is on his way out so I guess this will fall into the new Presidents lap.

Endea...

Hi there.  I am very sorry that you feel so abandoned and frustrated.  This post is fairly political in it's scope.  And was written shortly after the State of the Union.  You are right in that there are so many people hurt by the Real Estate crises.  I do not believe that anyone would argue that with you.  As for the stimulus package, I cannot speak for you, but if all things go as Speaker Pelosi and President Bush hope, all tax paying citizens in the middle class and below will be receiving some money.  No, it is not enough to subsidize our entire lives for even a month, but it will help.  I personally, would like to see the conforming loan limits raised in conjunction with the stimulus package.  In Oregon, we need that.  It is my understanding that many other places do as well.  That portion remains to be seen.

As for the fact that Realtors and Loan Officers are losing their homes, I do feel badly for them.  At the same time, my husband and I have always tried to live below our means.  We have not been perfect at it, but we have done well enough that this lull in the market is not threatening us in any fashion.  Although rough, I believe that we as Americans need to buckle down, save, invest, and plan for rainy days.  Savings accounts are for just that reason.  They are to save us when times are tough fiscally.  I am not attempting to sound harsh, instead I am hoping to get people to rethink how they live their lives these days.

finally I do not think that calling this all a "sub-prime" fiasco is the right thing to do.  Home prices became inflated, and many more things contributed too.  It is important, I believe, that we do not put blame on any one sector of the business.  We need to band together and get people to see that this is the time to purchase.  Home prices are low, interest rates are really low.  Let's dig ourselves out of this mess and not be calling on the government to pull us out and take credit for it.

I truly thank you for your thoughts and insight.  The times are unfortunate for this business industry and countless others.

I have no confidence in either party. It is becoming apparent to me that " business as usual " is not what this country needs at this time. We need to take the power out of the hands of special interests and give it back to the people.

Israel ~  It is sad for me to say, but I agree with you.  Very truthfully, I find no candidate to be worthy of the position or to enact real change in the areas which matter to me.  Thanks for your thoughts.

Jim ~  I do not know quite what to expect.  As for not having better candidates...those who would be "good" in my opinion are too smart to be massacred in the media.  There are decent people on both sides of the political spectrum, but in order to be the President, you need to be fairly political and very jaded.  Sad but true.  Thanks for your comment!  :)

Nice blog, well worded. I'm not too big on any of the current candidates. As for me, it looks like prophecy is going to be fulfilled with a women ruling america. I just see the end being very very soon.

Hi Josue ~  Thanks for adding your opinion to this discussion.  Obviously I agree with much of it.  I do not know that having a woman in office means the demise like prophecy describes.  No one gender or race is defined in the Bible with regards to end times, of course.  I do, however, believe that Christ will return sooner rather than later...  Thanks again fo ryour comments!  :)
