Ice Sculpture Displays from the Greenbrier’s 3rd Annual Winterfest Event
It was indeed a cold weekend for The Greenbrier’s 3rd Annual Winterfest featuring the amazing National Ice Carving Association Competition! I arrived at the competition on Saturday around 4:30 pm and believe me …. it was cold! How cold was it? All I can say using my smartphone camera and iPad camera and walking around to take photos of the completed ice sculptures, my fingers were numb! Once back in the car, my fingers were burning and tingling. I don’t know how the ice sculptors can do such an amazing and unbelievable job making the ice blocks come alive with such creative magical art.
The competition started on Friday, January 25, at 6:00 pm with the Speed Carving Competition: Carvers had 15 minutes to complete a sculpture in this fast-paced single-elimination challenge. Sorry to say missed this one and would have been interesting to watch as the sculptures take shape right before your eyes!
There were two competitions on Saturday, January 26. The first started at 10:00 am with a
Single Block Carve & Deliver Competition: Carvers had 2.5 hours to complete their ice sculptures! Below are just a few of the sculptures.
The second event on Saturday was at 4:00 pm with a four hour Two-Block Showpiece Competition: I had just arrived when the carvers started with their block of ice.
Today, Sunday, I go back to take photos of the ice sculptures that I missed . It was sunny and warm with temps 38-40 degrees. When I arrived to take more photos.....most of the sculptures had started to melt and break apart. Sad to see the beautiful art just melt away.
