Kill The Self-Critic Boost Your Encourager

Overvalue UndervalueI have seen many people throughout my days that the Malcolm Forbes quote in the graphic represent. What I say to that quotation is

Kill The Self-Critic Boost Your Encourager.

I have seen really good honest people be really down on themselves at time with ALL the good traits in them. They are hyper critical on THEMSELVES. Maybe it comes from perfectionism. Perfectionism is a killer cause we need to strive for EXCELLENCE. Why is excellence not ok? It is. I encourage people when I am around them, but they need to deep six the INNER CRITIC, and develop a complete I AM OK TODAY JUST AS I AM, and recognize their strengths. I know strong spiritual people who blast that they are not organized enough.

SO WHAT? Why don't they recognize they are SUPER HELPERS in everything they do, and maybe leave that folding of the laundry pile to the next day? They can also puff themselves up in some area that is NOT THEIR strong suit like a big people person in group settings, when what they really might be instead is a SUPERIOR listener to the more social type that they are faking as in life.

FIGURE OUT WHO YOU are and PUMP YOURSELF UP with your strengths. People like REAL. People like people who are confident in their STRENGTHS. And don't be negative and pick yourself apart. You're OK, I'm OK. A very good way to relate to the world.

Thanks Gary, I know for a fact I am way too hard on myself and it does actual hold me back and paralyze me.  I know I have lots of valuable and great traits, but I tend to always be hard on myself about most things.  I'm working on it, but it's always been my way and it's how I grew up, too.  It's hard to change.

Hi Gary,

As usual a great post! Sometimes the self critic is harder on themselves than on others!

Gary- what a philosopher you are, and a good one too.  You have a point that for some reason we are all reluctant to be our own cheerleaders.  We're taught not to boast and yet to strive for perfection.  We are our own harshest critics.

Thanks Gary for a very positive post - Keller refers to that as the drunk monkey on your shoulder - regardless of what we call it - it is there!
