“I am not a has-been. I am a will-be.” (Lauren Bacall), from Jack’s Winning Words.

Jack went on to talk about keeping a positive attitude about things and about cities like Detroit being on the come-back or will-be trail.

I had a tough year in real estate last year, but I don’t think of myself as a has-been just because of that. It was a tough year for many agents in my office, with listings way down and homes hard to find for the buyers that we had. It was also a year where many of my deals were short-sales, which meant increased work for decreased payback. So my production was down and my pay suffered for the loss.

Out of the adversity of 2012 I think I learned a bit about myself and grew a bit as a person. Now I’m more ready for what will likely be another challenging year and better equipped to deal with the real estate landscape as it exists. I can’t change the real estate environment that I have to work in, but I can and will change how I deal with it.

I don’t cringe at the prospect of yet another short-sale, because I’ve finally developed a very good approach to them and have a good team in place to help. I can’t make homes pop onto the market to meet my buyers’ needs; but, I have become much better at figuring out how to expand my buyers’ minds about the choices in the market that we have. I won’t win every listing that I compete for; but, I will sleep easy at night knowing that I gave it my best shot and was honest with the homeowners about the real market value of their home.

So, how do you see yourself in these tough times?  Are you a has-been or a will-be? Will you sales upseize the day or let the pressures of the day seize you? You can start off by vowing that you refuse to lose. Even if you don’t win every listing or make every offer stick, that doesn’t mean that you’re a loser. Learn something from every setback and see the opportunity to make changes in how you do business based upon that new knowledge and your “will-be” will turn into I am. I know that I am.

You have a winning attitude, Norm and that's 1/2 the battle (or more!).  You can't change the wind so you're adjusting your sails... Best wishes for a wonderfully successful 2013!!

Thanks, all. 2012 was tough but I also know that I brought some of that on myself because I took my eye off the real estate ball for a while and messed around doing some business development for a local business.

Now it’s full focus on real estate again. I’m seeing results from a lot of work on social media and with my web sites, so that is all good. Right now I’m getting more leads from my short sale web site than from the others, but that should change this year.

Stayin’ positive and stayin’ focused this year!

I like being an "I-am"!!!   Not a has-been and not a will-be, but an I-am.  I am in the moment, I am learning new things every day about the business, and I am implementing what works.   We don't know if we'll get a tomorrow, so while I'm here, I am.

I always hope to be a will-be! Thank you for the positive article and attitude. One of my all-time favorite sayings is, "Your happiness depends on what you think." Another favorite is, "As a man thinketh, so is he!" If this is true, and we know it is, then you are already there! Congratulations on your success!

Thanks all for your thoughts and encouragement. This is an easy business in which to get down, both on the business and on oneself. Sometimes I have to tell myself a bad day does not equal a bad week and a bad week doesn’t have to make it a bad month. When you get up t the bad month level you have to do the math that’s 1/12 which is only 8% of the year. There is still lots of time left to have a great year!

Good for you Norm!  Go for it all!  That's what I plan to do.  I just tell myself that I am one day closer, and keep my mind clear of spider webs that clog it up.

Great positive article Norm.  You have to deal with what you're given.  It's so easy to complain.  Just keep moving on!

Nice blog Norm. Attitude is everyting in this business. While it is important to look back at our past mistakes and successes, it is not everything. We must focus on what we are doing now and the success it will translate to in the future.
