Today is National Inane Answering Message Day-What Message Are You Sending?

It’s National Inane Answering Message Day-January 30-What Message Are You Sending?

It’s National Inane (which by the way is one of my favorite words) Answering phoneMessage Day today and time to ask yourself what message are you sending out.

Just as first impressions are important when selling a house,  they’re equally important in business.  You may “meet” a client first over the Internet,  through a networking event, or a referral but if their first exposure to you is over the phone it would be prudent to make sure your outgoing message doesn’t turn them away before you’ve had a chance to do the good ole “dog & pony” show.

We’ve all had to listen to them.... some outgoing messages are so long you either fall asleep or forget why you called.

Or some people speak so fast you’re not sure if you dialed the correct number or what they’re saying.

I heard an agent’s message a few weeks ago was like a 60 second ad for phone messagethem.  Again, too long and not listening anyway.

I’ve also heard some outgoing messages that have dogs and/or babies in the background.

My biggest pet peeve, and I admit it’s a personal pet peeve and I apologize in advance to anyone that happens to have this as their outgoing message is:

“I can’t take your message now but I’ll call you back at MY earliest convenience.”

(it just sounds to me as if you don’t really need my business and will return my call when you feel like it)

Try leaving yourself a message...

do you like what you hear??

What inane message have you heard lately?

Hi Kathy.  How about this?  The phone rings and somebody answers and says "you know what to do".  Dumb, dumb.

It's what day? Very interesting.  Who thinks up these days and how do you find them all? LOL.  I'm with you on the hate a long message and one in which they talk so fast I cannot understand a word they are saying. Nice post.

The ones that make me crazy are the ones that play what feels like half their of their favorite song and then tell you to leave a message.  OK, it's your favorite song.  I get it.  It's not my favorite song, heck I can't even understand what it says since you recorded it in the bathroom, WHILE flushing the toilet!!   Make it your ring tone and let me move on with my day!!

....or the ones that give a date that they will return to the office and it's 6 months ago!

INANE!  I love that word too.  Wow, I had no idea I had such strong feelings about messages, I better go check mine!

Hi Kathy, yes, who thinks up these crazy days? I hate the long message and I particularly don't like listening to someone speaking with marbles in their mouth-I like a Thank You for calling and just a few words that will encourage a response.

I haven't heard many inane messages; mine is brief and states my name, date, and that I can't take their call at that time.

With some agents I feel like a win the powerball just to get a call back. My peeve besides not getting called back is them talking so fast i cant understand anything

Nice tie in to the Inane message of the day. I too like the word, "inane." However, inane messages tend to make me "insane." Good reminder to all of us. What are we conveying?  Have a great Wednesday Kathy.

Hi Kathy -- this is a could be a great contest idea!   So many pet peeves -- here are my top two:

As Cindy Jones commented - the message that repeats the number but there is no name or anything else -- huh?

The event rundown for the day -- Hi it's January 30 and I will be taking the kids to class at 8, yoga class at 9, reviewing offers on the cute house on Maple Street at 10, lunch with Betty at noon.... YIKES

Have a wonderful Wednesday - may it be anything but inane

I've just encountered a listing agent whose "live" answering message needs some work. He answers his cell phone by gruffly snarling "What?". Heaven only knows what message you get if your call goes to voice mail - but don't think I want to find out!

Richard & Beth-thanks for the suggest!  It’s not just among agents but anyone in any kind of customer service /people focused profession.

BARFF- I had to go back and check mine as well! I think mine is similarto yours.

Cindy-oh yes, that’s another pet peeve.  I often don’t know if I’ve reached the correct number.

Conrad- egads.. that’s awful.  What you leave for your personal phone number is one thing but for business it should be professional.

Bobbie- I had one a few days ago and I had no idea what the outgoing message said.

BarbaraT- tell you what, I’ll record an outgoing Texas accent for yours and you can record a MA accent for mine.

Bridget- oh yes.. the ones that have an outgoing song that you have to listen to, while you’re tapping your fingers waiting to leave a message!

Joanna- I agree...short and sweet.  I have no idea where these days come from.

Carol- I remember calling some kind of service once and the message was from 2 people and they must have thought it was cute... kind of like when you were “16” cute.

Scott-I know.. I’m always surprised when I don’t even get a return call.

Kristin- I remember an outgoing message that was like a full blown ad for the person.  Who could remember all that!

Sharon- oh... use “inane” when you really want to “p__” someone off.  They may think you said “insane”.

Debb- thank you!  In full disclosure.. I had to check my outgoing message because I had not listened to it since I set it up.

Michael- OMG... I’m still thinking of the outgoing message of the person’s schedule!!  That’s a first for me!!!

Nancy- good golly does he mean it as a joke???

Kathy - I don't think he means it as a joke at all, unfortunately.  He lists bank owned homes, and the notion of having to talk to agents about his listings doesn't seem to appeal to him - trying to fight the urge to growl back at him!

Kathy, I hate that message too. I did a transaction with an agent who never answered her phone (I think she wasn't allowed to talk on her cell at work - what does that tell you). Anyway, I had to listen to that stupid message every day for several weeks.

I got the favorite song today.

I got the entire reading of an agent's ad campain over the last 10 years.

I got one that as soon as you began speaking, it says you are not speaking loud enough...hang up and try again.

I got one that said...the person has not set up a voice mail.

I got one that said push 1 for Jim 2 for Jane 3 for ...you get the idea.

And one actual live agent answered the phone but was on another line and could not talk.

That was just today.

I'm still amazed that some real estate agents cell phones still have the generic 'you've reached xxx-xxxx, please leave a message at the tone'.  No personal identification, no clue if you've reached the right number or not.
