Interesting San Diego Faces

Interesting San Diego Faces

This photo was taken at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps in La Jolla. The Aquarium is the public outreach center for the Scripps Institute  of Oceanography at the University of California in San Diego. These fascinating creatures are found in the deep dark recesses of the Pacific Ocean. There are some interesting things about this creature you may not know.

All known varieties are venomous, while only a few varieties have enough venom to injur or kill a human ( at least with their venom). They inject this venom through a beak like mouth on the side of the head. The female can lay tens of thousands of eggs during their week or two fertile time. The Octopus is equipped  with an Ink Sac that it spews out when it feels threatened. The main purpose is to conceal it while it escapes from a threat. The Octopus suckers  are arranged in two rows down each of their eight arms. Various species have more or less suckers which helps to define the species. The Octopus has large rigid eyes with horizontal pupils and they can see the same things upside down as right side up.

Interesting San Diego Faces is a series about the many faces that make up the beauty of San Diego. While I could choose so many notorious citizens that live here, I choose only those that entertain us with their innocence and vibrancy.

San Diego has many faces that are celebrated in the news, my faces are the special ones that touch our hearts in a different way. While it is true that most of the faces I choose are not the human kind, they still touch our lives in magical ways and express the feelings found and shared in our wonderful city.

Let's just say, it is their turn to enjoy their 15 minutes in the spotlight.

Another fascinating San Diego face. I knew they had a beak like mouth but I didn't know that they were venomous.. you always think of them as constricting their human prey or drowning them... probably from Sci-Fi movies. :-)

Wpw William,

I had no idea that octopus are venomous, or that they had eyes that can see things upside down or right side up, and I am delighted that you captured the horizontal slits.  I would love to see the aquarium at Scripps in La Jolla.  We have an aquarium in SB that we have been invited to, and just have not made time to see....Now, you have inspired me to go check it out and make time.  I am loving this series.  A

Good morning William. Is that a bird in the octopus? Perhaps I missed it, but that's what it looks like to me. Your pictures always intrigue.

I certainly didn't know they are all venomous. Neat picture. I would have thought there would be that much 'texture' or coloring to it.

"Public Outreach?"

This Publican is going to stand his distance!

PS: Great shot, but I'd be more comfortable if there was a glare on the glass just to be sure.

William,

I loved your post today! FYI, our Newport OR aquarium has a new octopus resident which I have not yet seen, our previous one died after a long an happy life at the aquarium, I was fortunate to be able to touch it and have an experience I will never forget. Thanks for this unique and wonderful post!

William - I am fairly sure that's a picture of guy, who was the very last blind date I had.  Did you say you snapped this photo in 1989. . .LOL.

Now that I've read about the venom injected through his beak like mouth, I'm certain it's the guy from my very last blind date. . .BUT, I lived to tell about it. . .tsk, tsk!
