Pasadena CA - Do You Want to Live in a Bungalow Court?

There are more than 100 bungalow courts in Pasadena CA according to a study completed in 2011.

Many are modest rentals with no amenities where off-street parking is rare. There are some that have been upgraded and converted to individual ownership with common area updates including parking. Of those that are individual ownership you will find a variety of architectural styles. In a typical bungalow court you will find smaller individual homes in a courtyard like setting with common garden areas. If you like a more efficient living space with less exterior maintenance than a single family home but don’t like the typical condominium - a bungalow court might be a good match for you.

Over 100 Bungalows now that's a lot. Many would certainly want the efficient living space with less exterior maintenance. In fact the older and busier we get the smaller Bungalow style home is more appealing to us.

The majority of the over 100 bungalow courts in Pasadena are rentals but those shown in the post are individually owned -- similar to a condo and with a association that maintains the common gardens. There are other cities and communites in our area where you can find them as well. The article from the Pasadena Star-News quoted someone from the Pasadena Historical Society who stated at one time there were said to be over 400 courts in the city. It's a shame many were probably destroyed to make room for(probably) less than interesting architecture -- thankfully that can't happen anymore.

Theresa -- thank you very much for stopping by and commenting. Bungalow courts in Pasadena may be comprised of California bungalows or those with more of Spanish or English architecture influence. I'm very happy to see that study was completed and even though the current number is substantially fewer than the over 400 before historical preservation was more common, the bungalow courts of Pasadena and other communities offer a glimpse into a somewhat simplified way of living. Pasadena CA has such a variety of architectural styles - it's an exciting place to visit and live.

Michael Jacobs - I like the bungalow concept a lot. I think it would make the ideal place for seniors to live in their very own tight-knit community. It would be ideal for seniors who don't have children, grandchildren, or visitors.
