How Not To Drain The Dishwasher After A New Counter Top Is Installed

By
Home Inspector with Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC 3380-000723

The title says it all - how not to drain the dishwasher after a new counter top is installed.

But some people really should be given a prize for ingenuity!  Uncle Bob is alive and well, and making his rounds.

In the olden days, the dishwasher used to drain to something called the "air-gap device."  There are other names, like vacuum breaker, but it's all the same.

The water would be pushed out of the dishwasher, the air would flow up and out over the counter top and the water would make a tight turn in a crotch in the line and flow into the disposal or drain.

Sometimes water spurts from the AIR-gap device, which it is not supposed to do.  Hence the name.

Then in recent years plumbing changed and if there is a nice loop over the disposal the dishwasher can be drained directly into the disposal.

That is usually what happens when kitchens are remodeled and new counter tops are installed.

You can see from this remodel that no hole was drilled through the quartz counter top for the former air-gap device.

Which is fine.

BUT YOU GOTTA CHECK!

Why must it be checked?  I already said - Uncle Bob and his rounds!

Imagine my utter and complete surprise when I saw this!

Well, shazam!  I've never seen that before!

OK, well, maybe, once or twice, with a couple of zeros behind the number.

But this guy added a special twist!

A shower cap!*

Always thinking ahead, Uncle Bob sees it differently!

To you that might look like an ordinary sandwich bag.  To him that is an opportunity to multi-task!

I ran the dishwasher and it did not leak!  Wow!

Not exactly certain the purpose of the bag, I am nonetheless impressed, and salute true ingenuity.

I guess he wanted the air AND the water to go into the drain!

It also kind of looks like he shimmed that counter top with a pliers and my protractor from 10th grade geometry class.  He also installed the sink, um, interestingly!

Hey, if it works, it works!

I LOVE IT!

My recommendation:  the next time you see a new counter top, peeky peeky under the counter to see what they have done with the dishwasher drain.  You might be as impressed as I with what you see!

* Why does that remind me of a shower cap?  Sometimes when I came home from mowing lawns (I mowed half my neighborhood) I wanted a shower but didn't want to wash my hair again.  So I would use my mother's shower cap.  Don't tell any of the girls at my junior high school though.  I'd be a goner.  They think I'm really cool, at least I hope they do, and if they knew I used a shower cap, well, please just don't say anything.

Thanks.

Jay, if nothing else, Uncle Bob certainly thinks outside the box. He was probably mentored by Rube Goldberg

Jay, you have to give him credit for his ingenuity. Uncle Bob's relatives whouldn't have gone to the extra expense of using a sandwich bag. Your secret is safe with me. I won't tell anyone about the shower cap.

Ingenious! Double zip lock containment, I see nothing wrong with that... very impressive Bob!

I can't believe you admitted to wearing a shower cap.... You are definitely secure!

That he was Ed!  We should see more cartoons!

Thanks Mike.  My mother also had one of those hair dryers like in the hair salons.  I often dried my hair there - with a net!  No tello.  That's perfect Spanish.

Fred - he did double up on it.  I like the mixing of tools to install that counter - hand and math!  And as to the shower cap, see my answer to Mike above you.

For years people have used pots and pans to catch drip leaks. Now, we use plastic sandwich bags? We are progressing

Ok, now your just making this stuff up to have things to write about. The sad part is I know that insn't true. You know the inspector is good when you see a pic like this. Can't see that by just bending over.

That is hysterical Jay.  Good find.  Who in their right mind would think that would work?  PS- lips sealed as far as the shower cap goes.

Jay -- amazing what they came up with to level that countertop.  Wouldn't proper shims have been cheaper?

Hope you have a fabulous weekend!

Richie - since it is clear plastic it can't be green.  I think.

No, Rob.  The inspector has to get down there and look around!  This one did.  Like the pliers?  Once I got under like that and the AAV was missing the cap!  Like you say, there's only one way to see that.  They people would have been continually pouring Clorox and lemon peels down their disposal thinking it was stinking so bad.

Thanks Gary.  There were so many girls I was trying to impress, well, I hope they never find out.  And it was hysterical!  I told my client she was going to make the hit parade, and she did!

Steven - what, those aren't shims?  Are you suggesting this is a shim sham, or a flim flam?

Sci-Fi works John.  I have to admit, this is a first for me, with the sandwich bag and all.

Scott - surely.  Who knows when they did it.  The kitchen was recently "remodeled."

What's an air gap? I almost never, never see one. In fact I just had a rare siting a few weeks back. Sort of like seeing Big Foot.

Recently water poured out of the air-gap device during my dishwasher test Jim, and the realtor said, "You mean it's not supposed to do that?"

I've never seen Big Foot, but I see these a lot!
