I just attended a wonderful lecture given by Michael Muir, the great-grandson of John Muir. It is amazing what a man can do in the face of adversity with a positive attitude. Michael always loved animals, especially horses. Horses were/are a love that Michael has continued through his whole life. When Michael was 15, he was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. But that did not stop him. His love for horses drove him on even when MS had seemed to paralyze him. With treatment he learned to walk again and then even competed professionally around the world in horse drawn carriage events.
But Michael is not the real story. The real story is the organization Michael started "Access Adventure", changing the limit of disability. Their Mission: To provide wilderness and open space access for people with disabilities using innovative, wheelchair accessible horse drawn carriages.
Access Adventure is a unique program that uses wheelchair accessible horse drawn carriages to provide open space recreation and wilderness access for people living with the challenges of disability. The program is open to people of all ages with compromised mobility, not just wheelchair users, and there is no charge to participate. This is an all volunteer. That is really neat. My uncle up in Eureka CA, takes kids with disabilities white water river rafting down the Rogue River, and it is amazing how some thing like that can change a life. Lance
