No, not mine! :)-

I am working on a huge home - over 5000 sq ft - that is very masculine. Lots of dark wood and brick - sometimes painted, sometimes not. It is a great home, but needed a lot of softening. Also, all the rooms are enormous!

This is the master with a king size bed in it and sitting area that is not pictured - and it still feels huge. Which is good, but it still needs some softening. I plan to put in a rug - but I am not sure what size? And, I think there needs to be some art over the bed, but I am trying to figure out how to work it with that window on the left. (This is a home where they just kept adding on and adding on... so there are lots of doors and window openings on the interior, that used the lead to the exterior). Lovely cord sticking out of the wall too, I know...

Any advice/suggestions?

How about wome type of treatment on the window?  I don't typically do window treatments (unless specifically requested by the client), but occassionally will add something simple to soften the space.  It looks like the window is trimmed nicely... a scarf is easy to pin into the top of the trim without damaging the wall or hanging hardware, or even a valance on a spring rod would be nice.  You're right, a rug would be nice and add a lot of texture and softness.  How about a bench or a couple cubes with a throw at the end of the bed for a little feminine touch?

Thanks Lisa! I think a bench or cubes is a great idea and will help alot. I am trying not to put too many holes in the walls, but I think that curtains would help soften the space too. There is a large window on the right (not shown in the picture) that I could add some floor length panels there.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Hi Bevin -

What about removing the nightstand on the right and putting a tree there to balance the window. Then add art over the bed, add a rug and if it still seems too big I agree a bench or cubes would be great. I think introducing some color would help warm it up.

I would move the whole set over the right, creating a small space between the wall and nightstand (this will help hide the cord as well).  This should center the bed on the wall between the window and the wall - the larger space, leaving the window as it's own area.  I agree with Kelly then about the large tree - in front of the window.

Two pieces of art, side by side (level) will work now because the window is no longer an issue (it isn't anchored to the bed any longer).  A 5x7 rug tucked about 6-8" under the bed would be great to soften the look.  You could also use the little cubes that go with that one glass coffee table we have at the foot of the bed - or I have 2 brown leather cubes coming up next week.. lol!  (For everyone else, they were purchased at Walmart for about $40/ea and are great!)

I would also add books under the candles to raise the height.  (Didn't we have books under them in the warehouse?  You stole them for all the bookcases, didn't you?)  The lamps are too tall for the accessories you have it pared with.  Two books on each side will make a huge difference....

Bet you wish I had just sent this privately, huh?  I figured I would post as a learning experience for everyone who was interested.... besides, then they get to see what you have to deal with from me... lol!

Thanks Kelly and Melissa! I just thought about adding a tree this morning.

Yes, I did steal the books for a bookcase, and already have some in my car to put under the candles!

I think shifting everything is  a great idea, and I'm sure will fix the problem.

Thanks again!

Hi Bevin, I agree about the tree to balance the window.  Is this the best wall for the bed?

Hello Bevin, Could the bed be centered on the left side wall? Then the window wouldn't be such an issue. Add a large framed art piece and maybe a little writing table on the window wall, maybe not - depending on the space available in the rest of the room. I would also add some color. The rugs, etc. would soften and a soft curtain pulled to the corner side would really change the feel from cold to cozy. --Lin

Unfotunately this is the only wall for the bed. This photo is taken from one of the doorways into the room - there is actually a step down b/c this is an addition. On the right wall is a shallow bay window, and the wall to the immediate left of the doorway I am standing in is a builtin media cabinet and bookshelves. On the far left wall, there is another doorway leading to the bathroom, closet and back to the living room.

The homeowner has said that the window has been a problem for potential buyers - they think it is awkward and cannot imagine placing their furniture around it. So... that's my job! To make it as less awkward as possible.

I am returning to the house today to try all of your suggestions! I will post more photos and get more feedback.

Thanks!!

Bevin, Can the bed be angled in the far right corner? --Lin

I would shift away from the window as well, adding something bench? cubes? and a rug to the end to increase the bulk and take up space. A sitting area at the end of a bed is practical - that is where I throw my bathrobe(in the real world).

Lin and Kathleen - I finished the home yesterday. I will post the updated pictures later today. I really appreciate your feedback and I hope you like the end result!

I am not sure the bed would have looked right angled in the corner because of the shape of the room. I tried some cubes at the foot of the bed and those didnt look right either. I think they were too small for a King bed.

Anyway, yall will see it soon and I appreciate your honest feedback! Thanks!
