Say you live next door to Mrs. Kravitz and she likes to call the city on you all the time. Say you own a rental house and the tenant doesn't use a grass trimmer around the mail box, leaving some tall grass there.

BAM! $200.00! Do not pass go!

That's what is happening in Kansas City Missouri right now! Seems the city council decided there should be no more warning letters, notes on the door, or even a friendly phone call.

If your neighbor calls in and tells the city you have weeds or your paint is peeling... BAM! $200.00!

In August, 2007 the City Council decided to “streamline the process” of Kansas City's housing code enforcement system.

Wayne Cagle; a Judge Municipal Housing Court  for 17 years, said their new “streamlining process” is often unfair to property owners.

Wayne Cagle says “The Housing Court defendants understand the unfairness. They are pleading not guilty in unprecedented numbers. It is time for the City Council to rectify it’s mistake.”

For more than twenty years. The process for  violations began with a written notice mailed to the property owner and a chance to correct the violation. With the August change, city inspectors now FIRST issue a ticket to owner, if the inspector finds a nuisance.

The Housing Police Now….NO warning letter, NO door hanger, NO knock on the door and NO chance to correct!

A Nuisance can be a weed or a stick that fell out of a tree. It may be the trash your neighbors dumped in your yard while you were at work. No Warning, Just Pay UP! Bam! $200.00!

Get too many and they may suggest Jail time! No room for the thugs, drug dealers, pimps and criminals but if your a homeowner they'll make room for you because you will pay up! While crime rages out of control in KC were putting homeowners in jail for not mowing their lawns.

If you have ever been to housing court in Kansas City you know what a Kangaroo Court it is. Kangaroo Court

The city needs the money so anyone whom they feel the can extort some money out of is guilty!

I'm sure glad I don't live in your city.  Man is that the biggest rip off I've ever heard of.  What a scam!  Are the coffers so empty they have to rob the public?

Wow, Ben, I thought Des Moines was a little too rough on landlords. That takes the cake! Good luck getting it changed.
