Hiking My Way to Happy and Healthy!

There is just something about being outside in the fresh air andHiking my way to Happy and Healthy hiking that creates joy, happiness and a calmness within me.  About 5 years ago I had a foot injury which required surgery and it was tough impossible to walk, much less hike. Every once in awhile I'd get out there and 'try' to hike and pretend it wasn't hurting as much as it really was but it never lasted long. I'd get frustrated and just give up.  I also let every excuse about business get in the way. And if you're in real estate you probably know what I'm talking about - right?

Last fall I made a promise to myself that as soon as it cooled down in the 80's I was going to hike every single day for at least one month

JUST DO IT WAS MY MOTTO

And that is exactly what I did. I told myself that hiking was my job. Yup - my job and I took it very seriously.  No matter how busy I was or what was going on I stopped - put on my hiking boots and went out and got my job done.  I didn't go very far at first but every day I went further and further and faster and faster.  I enjoy listening to music or inspirational stuff and many times I'd get lost in the music and forget how far or fast I'd gone.  I was loving it - by the end of the month.  I decided that I'd continue but back down to 5 to 6 times a week, time permitting.  As the holidays approached I knew my family would be in town for 2 weeks and they'd just have to be hiking with me! I wasn't going to stop cause it felt so good. That worked and we all had fun together hiking.

Here's where I fell a bit short....  After the holiday I got swamped with business and then I was sick for a few weeks. It knocked my off my butt socks and I didn't get out at all.  When I saw this contest it was just the inspiration I needed to get my plan back in place and get hiking++.

Thanks to Stacey-Ann Baugh for creating the Get Healthy in the Rain Challenge!

The last few weeks I've been out hiking 3 times a week. Well that's a little wimpy for me so I'm going to bump it up to 5 times a week.  Everyday I'm going to go a little longer and faster (without re-injuring my foot). I so look forward to the day when I get to the top AND THEN go down the back side (which is a killer steep hill) and then back up to the top and down the front side. That's when I'll know I've made it and I'll be smiling all the way.  Ok - that's a bunch of BS because it's seriously a killer hill on the back side!!  So I may not like the killer hill at first....but I will love it at some point! You'll know I've done the back side of Shaw Butte when I've got pictures - proof postive!!

Hiking my way to Happy and Healthy

My husband is my biggest supporter.  From day one he's been encouraging me to get back up on "my hill" behind our house.  And he never - ever - makes me feel guilty about putting hiking first. In fact he always says - good for you!  Excellent job!  I think I'll hire you!  LOL  We're business partners so he's kind of stuck with me anyway!!

I also look forward to the support of the Get Healthy in the Rain Group Achieving our health goals together makes it so much more fun.  And when one of us gets a little stuck on the journey we've got each other to get back on the path and feel good about it again.  Our ActiveRain Family is rocking and moving together!

Hello Ms Anna B

I hike every other day and have scenic views and good conversation with different people and I am a supporter of hiking...Then, watch what you eat or it is all in vain...Add a little consistency and you got good health at some point...

Anna: Good luck with your hiking regimen!  You are lucky- With views like the ones you shared and weather in the 80's, I think I'd be hiking more, too.  It's cold, gray and snowy here in Michigan- much more conducive to a treadmill than tromping around outside.  Thanks for sharing!  :)

Wayne have a great time!

Dick - it works.  And I know how we can all get into those 'corners'! Just do it I say!

Richard & Beth - absolutely. Well on the way:)

Alexandra the cold bug has hit a lot of us this year.  Tough to find energy.  Enjoy yoga once again!

Roger - actually I do it with or without as it's been a life long 'habit' of mine.  And it helps that he totally undersands the value behind hiking in all ways.  And then some.....

Mike - I would be too if I were in cold land.  I was just outside and it's so lovely.  And hey...great to see another Elevations Agent online!!

Deb glad to hear you've come though a long hard year. Here's to a GREAT 2013!  And yes....I see this type of folks every day.....running up the hill at full speed.

Belinda - Just do It!  Best choice I made last Sept to stop the excuses and just get back on the hill.

Tammie - it's so refreshing and calming.  Love it! Love it! Love it!

Karen you lucky duck - I wish I could run again.  I did for years and being in the zone is my favorite place.  I just get there differently these days.

Erica - it's a good thing to have support all around!

Lou - awesome place for photos.  I can't wait till the mountain wild flowers start blooming this year since we've had a lot of rain.

Carla - it's really so pretty.  Everyday I look around and feel grateful that I'm able to stop and enjoy it all.

Paula - you go girl - back at cha!

Joan - thinking of you and sending you love!  Take care!

Prayful - just having a good time and bringing in all the good possible. It's really quite awesome!

Kristin - of coursebecause I decided to do so as I have all my life....with a few challenges in between the years recently. I actually am not one that likes junk food at all. Never had so I'm grateful for that. Now my husband....he's another story.

Debbie indeed we are and it's good for one's entire life!

Scott - that is so easy to do!

Rhidi when you get it you get it. I have a strong feeling you get it!

Michael - hiking up that hill is even better!! And the view is always inspiring.

Fernando not sure it's discipline. It's more a case of passion to hike and being in the zone...and what that brings to life.

Jared - got it!

Charles - my pleasure!

Richie my friend and poet....you are so awesome!

Diane - you're welcome!

Andrew if I still lived in MN I'd be at the indoor gym or cross country skiing.

Toni - been there recently.  Next time I'll do a Banana Flag!!  LOL

Lottie I know you love hiking as much as I do. And what fun we'd have hiking either in San Fransisco area or the Phoenix area. It's a date!
