Hiking My Way to Happy and Healthy!
There is just something about being outside in the fresh air and hiking that creates joy, happiness and a calmness within me. About 5 years ago I had a foot injury which required surgery and it was tough impossible to walk, much less hike. Every once in awhile I'd get out there and 'try' to hike and pretend it wasn't hurting as much as it really was but it never lasted long. I'd get frustrated and just give up. I also let every excuse about business get in the way. And if you're in real estate you probably know what I'm talking about - right?
Last fall I made a promise to myself that as soon as it cooled down in the 80's I was going to hike every single day for at least one month
JUST DO IT WAS MY MOTTO
And that is exactly what I did. I told myself that hiking was my job. Yup - my job and I took it very seriously. No matter how busy I was or what was going on I stopped - put on my hiking boots and went out and got my job done. I didn't go very far at first but every day I went further and further and faster and faster. I enjoy listening to music or inspirational stuff and many times I'd get lost in the music and forget how far or fast I'd gone. I was loving it - by the end of the month. I decided that I'd continue but back down to 5 to 6 times a week, time permitting. As the holidays approached I knew my family would be in town for 2 weeks and they'd just have to be hiking with me! I wasn't going to stop cause it felt so good. That worked and we all had fun together hiking.
Here's where I fell a bit short.... After the holiday I got swamped with business and then I was sick for a few weeks. It knocked my off my butt socks and I didn't get out at all. When I saw this contest it was just the inspiration I needed to get my plan back in place and get hiking++.
Thanks to Stacey-Ann Baugh for creating the Get Healthy in the Rain Challenge!
The last few weeks I've been out hiking 3 times a week. Well that's a little wimpy for me so I'm going to bump it up to 5 times a week. Everyday I'm going to go a little longer and faster (without re-injuring my foot). I so look forward to the day when I get to the top AND THEN go down the back side (which is a killer steep hill) and then back up to the top and down the front side. That's when I'll know I've made it and I'll be smiling all the way. Ok - that's a bunch of BS because it's seriously a killer hill on the back side!! So I may not like the killer hill at first....but I will love it at some point! You'll know I've done the back side of Shaw Butte when I've got pictures - proof postive!!
My husband is my biggest supporter. From day one he's been encouraging me to get back up on "my hill" behind our house. And he never - ever - makes me feel guilty about putting hiking first. In fact he always says - good for you! Excellent job! I think I'll hire you! LOL We're business partners so he's kind of stuck with me anyway!!
I also look forward to the support of the Get Healthy in the Rain Group. Achieving our health goals together makes it so much more fun. And when one of us gets a little stuck on the journey we've got each other to get back on the path and feel good about it again. Our ActiveRain Family is rocking and moving together!
