 Blogging Effectively and with Purpose

Blogging is one of the most effective tools to market and brand yourself as an established authority in your particular niche and chosen field. Moreover, blogging is one of the fastest vehicles to joining the ever growing online community and create a following.

Below are some tips from my own experience on Active Rain, years of reading successful Active Rain blogs and researching the best ways to position your blog for success. Whether you’re just starting out or are a veteran blogger, we can all hone and improve our blogging skills.

Target Your Audience

Decide exactly what your blogging goals are and implement them in your posts. For example, as a NJ home stager I want to continually brand myself as an authority on home staging. One effective way I do this is teach the general public and Realtors the value of home staging by sharing home staging tips, advice and  before/after photos to engage Realtors, Sellers and likeminded home stagers. Sharing information is the fastest way to gain new subscribers.

Build Relationships

Spend time joining groups with likeminded people. Active Rain has a group for just about anything from hiking to dog lovers, photos, inspiration and everything in between.  The point is all your posts don’t have to be about real estate, home staging, home inspections, ect..……..which brings me to my next suggestion.

Let people know who you are.

If all your posts are business related people won’t get to know you. Write about your passions, share photos, write about your area and share your experiences; it’s okay to talk about yourself on AR. After all, networking is the exchange of information between people. Try to maintain a balance between business, personal, localism and information sharing.

Stay Motivated

Blogging is about the long haul and consistency is critical. The most successful Active Rain bloggers write posts almost daily. Every blog doesn’t have to brilliant, but if you’re not consistent you’ll have less chance of growing your network and keeping the subscribers you have.

Be Engaging

The sign of an effective blogger is knowing how to engage your readers and start a conversation. Ask for opinions, write about a good or bad experience that others can relate to and identify with. Everyone loves to share their own experience, and questions are the best way to engage your readers.

Be an Authority on Your Topic

If you're writing a post on a particular topic, do your research and link it to other credible sources with additional information, especially if it's helpful or insightful such as statics. The more you know about your topic, the more you will be viewed as topic authority. Don't give out statistics unless you can site the source. Again, this lends itself to credibility.

Take a Stand

Everyone isn’t always going to agree with you. However, most people respect someone who is willing to take a stand without wavering when people don't agree with them. I’ve written a few of what I call, “Blog Gone Wild” with hundreds of comments and some not so nice. Let’s face it, we all like a little controversy and this is a surefire way to get you noticed!

Increase Your Visibility

One of the great tools Active Rain affords us are those buttons at the top of our blog: Google+, LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter for more visibility. This is another great tool to promote your blog. And yes, this  means you need to spend some time on these other social media sites, however, if you're looking to increase your visibilitly, subcribers and networking circle it's worth the effort.

Reciprocity

Effective blogging is about building a relationship with your readers. Spend time reading other’s blogs and commenting. You will get to know fellow bloggers, learn valuable information and increase your network. Moreover, you will meet interesting, wonderful people and connect with some of the smartest, most amazing bloggers on Active Rain while learning a thing or two!

Janelle - I'll email you and explain it. It's easy.

Bill & Liz - coming from you guys (AR's blogging Rock Stars) that's such a big compliment. I was thinking of you guys when I wrote this!

Gary - I agree wholeheartedly. Never would I get into politics, religion - those are subject I stay away from even with my own friends - way too controversial! Good point!

Rhonda - Glad I cold help!

Joni - you're so sweet and right back at YOU!

Roger - if it's not fun you won't have tenacity. Besides, the rest of us just aren't as interesting as you and have to work a little harder, lol!

Thanks Jill and you're one of Active Rain's top bloggers so that's a big compliment!

Well put Debbie and great advice! You know exactly how to blog effectively!

RE/MAX Premier Choice - thank you!

Kathy - in the ever changing world of social media there's always more to learn.

Tom - Thank you Tom and trust me, I read a lot on blogging preparing this post.

Debbie - I'm no expert, but I follow a lot of excellent bloggers in the Rain and do my research.

Eileen - motivation is the key! I hope one of these days we can meet in the city and have lunch!

Pat & Steve - Thank you!

Beth - that's one of the best things about AR - there are so many intelligent people who share their knowledge.

Kristin - that's all part of effective blogging. Good for you taking a class - it all helps!

Larry & Sheila - while I was writing this post I thought about the top blogger which of course included you!

Janice - you most definitely have tenacity. I'm in awe how you blog daily! That's one area I need to work on.

Ron & A - you write on of the most prolific and intelligent blogs on AR - I always learn more about branding from your posts!

Carla - I wrote what I wished someone had taught me in the beginning - I learned by trial and error; not the best way;)

Melissa - it's a balance to comment back while visiting other's blogs. Many times I write one big thank you, answer any questions and use my time to comment on other's blogs. When I have more time I do both - but it's not always easy!

Sarah & Les - thank you and we can all improve our blogging skills!

Bobbie - there are so many dog lovers in the Rain that would love to read about your pups! Take some photos and tell us about them!

Joan - key to building your network!

Christina - you're welcome and I hope they help!

Mike - you are a master blogger! You hit the ground running on AR and haven't stopped. I'm a huge fan!

Praful - good point - not everyone blogs for business. I think you should be having fun either way!

Christine - I need to remind myself and still sometimes forget to link my post to my web-page - blogging 101!

William - that's high praise coming from you! You're a top blogger and I've learned a lot reading your posts. YOU know exactly how to network and are a wonderful friend!

Dorie - you're another top blogger and friend I thought about when writing this post. You are the queen of blogging and building relationships. I only read two of your posts (years ago) and subscribed. I consider you an AR Rock Star....but you already know that;)

Sharon - thank you. Your blog is the perfect example of business, personal, information sharing and tips!

The Christiansen Team - thank you! We all need reminders!

Pat & Wayne - you don't have to blog daily, but don't disappear for a month or two. That's when you lose readers. You do what you can!

Keith - good to see you! Yes, I do work in Montclair and would love to talk. Call me anytime!

Amanda - thank you and I'm working on consistency myself!

M. Lynn - sharing about ourselves is what connects us with like-minded people and gets you noticed. Not everything is business - thank goodness!

Christina - excellent point "professional and relevant"!

Hi Kristine,

Well, I'm a little late finding this because I am still in a continual battle to improve my consistency.  I do know that your comments about consistency are right on target as are the other tips and suggestions.

In addition to the great tips, the way you formated this post looks great.  You've reminded me of some things I need to work on.

Lastly, congratulations on the well deserved feature.  I hope you have a great week.
