Getting My Health on Here in the Rain

By
Industry Observer with RETIRED / State License is Inactive Inactive License Oregon

This post is the first of three which will be posted to the Get Healthy in the Rain . . .. An ActiveRain Challenge.

There was a time when I stopped going to the gym.   And I missed it very much.  One of the best things I ever did was buy a 24-Hour Gym Lifetime Membership.  When my son went off to college, about 8 years ago, I needed to find something to do, so I joined the gym.  I think I paid $1,000 for the Membership, but my monthly dues have been $8.00/month as a result.

I stopped going to the gym in 2008, after my knee got screwed up.  Then last year I started back.  I felt so good about my decision and loved the people and friends I met.

I went regularly, starting slow and then going almost every day.

And then . . . as life happens . . . a wrench got into the works, I got sick 3 weeks ago and life took another turn.  I have Pneumonia and it's been a very hard illness to deal with.  It's quite painful.

The antibiotics are working and I'm much better, but it will take another 2-3 weeks before I can even start to think about going back to my beloved 24-Hour Gym.

By the way, I haven't had a voice in 3 weeks.  Can you imagine NOT talking for that long?  It's annoying, frustrating, calls go to voicemail and I am in an email/texting mode now.

Health is VERY important to me.  This Pneumonia has tossed a wrench in the works, that's for sure and put a grinding stop to normal, once again.

But, once again . . . ActiveRain is here for me and is a blessing.

My posts will be about re-re-entering the world of working out after an illness and how building up stamina will be goal!  I am so fatigued now with little energy.

One of the things I did PRIOR to 2008 was swim.  I would swim laps and laps and laps.  After 2008, when I stopped going to the gym the swimming stopped.  One of my goals for 2013 was to start back with swimming at the end of my work out.  Then I became sick and that screwed that up!

On top of the gym, I also walk my dog Molly for 45 mins. at least 4-5 times per weeks.  This will continue too.

So goals are:

  • Get better
  • Not become frustrated with life
  • Slowly start back up at the gym
  • Begin swimming
  • Try to avoid wrenches

Thank your for the challenge and something to work towards, look foward to and stay positive about!

I hope you are getting better, but you are right, it will take a couple of weeks before you are ready to try even a little.  Gosh I hope you find your voice again soon.  And man do I wish there was an indoor pool somewhere around here.

Sorry to hear Carla about the Pneumonia.  I had it quite a few years ago and it was horrible.  Glad to hear you are doing better.  Now a gym membership would be a whole other post - (I was bad.)

Goodness!  You are having a really rough time of it.  I can't imagine being that sick and not being able to speak for three weeks.

The gym will be there for you when you recuperate.  Take it easy and pamper yourself in the meantime.

Sorry, I didn't know you were sick, Carla.  And I am glad you are on the mend.  Exercise is something we all need to do.  We spend so much time sitting at our computers and it ain't healthy.  Which reminds me.  I need to get off my butt and on to the stair stepper next to my desk.  Keep up the regiman, Carla.

I hope you get to feeling better soon.  Those types of wrenches seem to happen to me, too!  You have all the intention in the world to complete a goal, whatever it might be, and there is something that stops you.  But this is just a temporary wrench!  I can hear your determination in your post!

Carla, Forget about all the rest of your health goals right now. You will get back to those in a bit. Focus all your energies on getting better and then give yourself a little more time before you go back to your workout routine. I've had pneumonia and your immune system is vulnerable afterwards. Be patient. I'm sorry you have to deal with this. So many people are getting pneumonia right now!

I don't know how this one slipped by me, but I am glad I am reading it today. I can't wait to read your follow-up post to see if you kicked the pneumonia and are on your way to the gym. I just renewed my gym membership TODAY!
