Happy Leap Year! A Riddle In The Rain!
What is it appropriate to write about on the eve of that wonderful holiday in February...Groundhog Day!
Next to Halloween, it's one of my least favorite holidays! At least it is not one of those holidays that is replete with specially made fancy decorations which adorn our mantlepieces, windowsills, front doors, dining room tables, front lawns...like skeletons that glow in the dark, jack o lanterns, scarecrows, witches, and the like!
So what is so special about this day? Stay with me now for some fun!!!
Well, for me, it's a reminder that we're through with the two worst and longest winter months...December and January! That's enough to make you break out of your winter doldrums...your short day depressions, your post holiday blahs, etc.
Well this post was intended to be short and sweet! And fun!!! And so here's somewhat of a conundrum that I would like to propose...listen closely and think hard now!!!
There is an event, a sort of 'ritual' which generally occurs every year on December 1 and is repeated on March 1, but because this is a leap year it will be the longest time elapsing between the reoccurrence of this event...a total of 91 days! Until 2012, that is!!!
I'll give you a couple of hints to help you 'solve' the puzzle!
First, It doesn't happen with everyone, but probably most of us here on active rain!
Second, It probably occurs more with men than with women.
Third, This ritual only needs to be done by those wearing 'old style' mechanical, non electronic watches!!!
There, now solve the riddle!!! Please don't cheat...Active Rain Honor!!!
I'll post the answer way down at the bottom so you're not tempted to peek!!!
Answer: Reset the calendar feature on your wristwatch!!! Please don't ask me to explain...find a good friend and ask them to explain it to you...it won't be so embarassing to us!
Fran, I've never seen someone have so much fun with words as you do....each of your blogs just leaps out with playfulness and enthusiasm. Are you like this in real life too?
hmmm, I've never thought about the calendar feature on those old time watches before....interesting.
December here is usually mild and nice. January and February are our two coldest months and we often get thaws or spring like weather in the middle of each month (mini-springs) just before another cold snap.
Today we're being plummeted by a big snow storm that came up from the US ! Two days ago the winds were so bad here (120 km/hour in some spots) that a truck was blown right over on the bridge that goes from my city over to the neighbouring island of Prince Edward County.
