The newest Active Rain Challenge is to Get Healthy In The Rain and one of the ways many have set as a goal is to get out and walk more often. While walking is a great way to get some fresh air, de-stress, strengthen muscles and drop a few pounds. it is important to start slowly and be aware of any pain that is aggravated by walking. These seemingly minor conditions can cause pain and further injury and can keep you from reaching your fitness goals.
- Plantar Fasciitis A tenderness in the heel or bottom of the foot
- Ingrown Toenails Swelling and/or pain on the sides of the toenails
- Achilles Tendinitis Pain in the back of the heel and in the lower calf
- Bunion Pain in the big bone on the side of the big toe
- Lumbar Strain Mid to lower back pain and strain
- Neuroma Pain in the ball of foot-common between 3rd and 4th toe
- Shin Splints Pain, soreness and stiffness in the shins
- Bursitis Pain and soreness on the outside of the hips
- Runner's Knees Pain and throbbing in the front of the knee
- Stress Fracture Acute pain in the lower leg and/or foot
If the pain is more than what you consider normal, especially when you are starting a new fitness plan, and it lasts more than a week or two, it is a good idea to call a specialist such as a podiatrist, physical therapist, physiatrist or orthopedic surgeon.
If you are serious about walking, you need to get a good pair of walking shoes. And not just an all purpose sneaker.
Get fitted properly for the right shoe for your feet, go to a professional
Get the right size, don't get caught up in buying the same size as you have always worn, athletic shoes can be sized differently and need to fit properly.
Don't keep them forever, toss 'em, especially if you are walking a lot. Professionals advise every 500 miles.
