Getting Healthy In The Rain - I'm Going For It!

I'm late on my entry to Stacey-Ann's Getting Healthy in the Rain contest but that's ok I don't need to officially enter but I do want to partake.  I've been so inspired by the entries thus far that I want to get outside my comfort zone and do something I definitely hadn't dreamed of a year ago.

For a long time I wasn't healthy.  I was a smoker, drinker and ate like crap.  We traveled around the country for RainCamp and there were so many after parties and meals on the road that I just kind of gave up.  I'd go shopping and loathe trying to fit into a size I was a year prior.

In August of 2011 I gave up drinking.  Haven't had one sip since and never plan to again.  And then...I started working out.  I NEVER thought I could enjoy exercise or be one of "those girls'; usually I was at happy hour with friends while others were at the gym.  But by giving up drinking my social calendar opened up and working out fit right in.

My community center is a block from home and offers this Move-It Pass.  It's super cheap and they offer unlimited classes like step aerobics, gut & glutes and Zumba.  I was a little scared to start Zumba but had taken a salsa class a few years back so thought what the hell.  What a surprise it was, I had more fun than I could remember!  Growing up I was a dancer, heavily involved in ballet, jazz & lyrical.  I gave it up in high school as it got in the way of my social calendar...one of the biggest regrets of my life.  But that love, excitement and happiness was found again in Zumba.  I couldn't believe I was actually looking forward to classes and working out.

So my lovely AR community, I am going to get certified to teach Zumba.  On March 16th I will travel to Yakima, WA to get certified.  It was very scary to push the "Register Now" button but I know my Rainers have my back so I did it.  Getting out of my comfort zone and inspiring others to get healthy is something I know I can do.

My plan is to hopefully teach at a YWCA or spot where people without money could benefit.  Maybe kids or women in shelters or even retirement homes. I'm not doing this to get paid, rather I'm doing this to grow as an individual and give back in a way that I'm passionate about.

Thank you all for your inspirational stories and for giving me the courage to do something that I never thought I could do. This path will be a fun and spiritual one!

Kerrie, or anyone:  Just what IS Zumba?  Does anyone have a link to a Zumba class, or whatever it is called, so I could understand what you are referring to?  Just wondering.

OK:  I Googled Zumba, and found a series of videos.  To me it looks like a Latin'ized combination of the old Step and regular aerobics (without the step thingie) and/or Jazzercise... but on steroids.  Am I close?

I used to go to step aerobics classes, and was adicted to them back in the early 90's when I lived in the DC area.  Some weeks I'd go to up to five classes.  But that was 20 years ago, and about fifty pounds ago.

You Go, Kerrie!  Maybe after you get your certification, you could convert all the women in your office, and do a full video class of Zumba, and we could kinda sorta do it together.

Let it Rain!

You guys keep me going every single day!  Thank YOU!

Praful - Bob will have a post about that coming in the next few days.  The Dallas MeetUp will be on Saturday, February 16th.  I don't fly in until Sunday night so I'm sorry to miss you all!

Karen Anne - Zumba is a dance fitness class.  It incorporates salsa and other types of dance to get you moving and healthy.  You just use your body and have fun!  And let me tell you...it is SO fun!

Kerrie:  Here's an idea.  You could do a Zumba class with the group Chumbawanba providing the music.  Then you could advertise it as "Chumbawamba Zumba night."  It's got kind of a "ring" to it, doncha think ?

Kerrie~ I tried a Zumba class once and as much as I enjoyed the "dancing", I just couldn't keep up.  I have RA and I had to constantly take breaks.  Best of luck! I know you can do it! :-)

When I lived in the DC area in the late 80's and early 90's... I started step aerobics.  Whew... what a workout, at least for me.  It took me a little over six weeks to get myself where I could complete an entire class without having to "march in place" from time to time to catch my breath so I could go on.

But, I got there.  Those classes were addictive.  Prolly one of the most enjoyable physical exercise activities I have ever done.  Ended up going to about five classes a week.  One place was called Spa Lady... in Alexandria, and the other was up on Democracy Blvd.  I wish I could still do that.

Hi Kerrie ~ I was excited to hear that you've discovered a love for Zumba and you're getting certified... way cool!  I've been doing Zumba for years and I absolutely love it.  In the old days, we did aerobics... but the movements were choppy.  Zumba incorporates more side to side motion, with more Shakira style hip action (shake those hips baby) and the music has a better vibe and beat which makes you want to move.  Love, Love, Love it!  Congrats kiddo and much success!
