"Hi. I'm from the real estate office, and I'm here to help you."

"Hi.  I'm from the real estate office, and I'm here to help you."  That line is reminiscent of the "I'm Slick Salesmanfrom the government, and I'm here to help you" line of the 80s that drew laughter and a healthy skepticism from most Americans.

I took a young couple out over the weekend who are looking to buy their first home.  They were excited and scared to near paralysis.  During our time together, they shared their most recent story about the agent they had just fired.  He was trying to push them into a his listing that would make him a quick sale, a nice commission and nightmare for the buyers.  They liked it, but on further inspection, they found that the house had foundation problems.

The agent encouraged them not to worry about it, it was only a $20,000 repair.  No problem.  Sign here, and when you get settled in, have the repair made and you'll have a great house.  They nearly did it because they are so green, but sanity took over and they dropped him like a hot potato.

I trust that most of my colleagues look at their role as a Realtor as a helping profession.  Far too often, young buyers like this are at the mercy of their agent.  I know many of us dread a pack of parents, friends and family helping a young first time buyer, but if the agent assisting them is willing to steam roll them into a purchase that will cause them harm, they need the back up of other more experienced homeowners.

Friends, I hope you treat these young inexperienced buyers the same way you would want an agent to treat your kids.  This couple was able to place a contract on their first home on Monday.  They are excited, nervous and ready to take the next step toward adult level experience, and I am thrilled to hold their hand through the process.  I really am from the real estate office, and I will definitely help you.

I often think of my experience of buying my first home and say, "If I had known then what I know now..." I will never pressure someone into buying a home the way I was pressured. That was nearly 15 years ago and I still remember the agent and the sinking feeling I was making a bad decision. But her pressure got the best of me. Ugh...

So true, Bill.  It's all about the paycheck with some of these folks.

Peggy, I remember that first event too.  I had a terrible first agent, but that deal fell apart.  The second first agent was awesome.  She helped us make a lot of good decisions that took us over the top.

Mike, I do love assisting many first time home buyers, and I most certainly will put my two cents into any deal that I felt was a bad idea from the very beginning. I want them to have pleasant memories of that first home, so they will want to do business with me whenever they get ready to buy that move up home.

Hi Mike, I was just about to say... then I read Cindy's comment and well, now I don't need to say it. One of the real issues that never really make it the discussion table out here is that too many people are house poor. They struggle to be able to buy the property and then they realize they haven't the money to even furnish it well and I think that easily leads to a lot more problems with deferred maintenance. There just doesn't seem to be good choices for housing that is affordable for enough people. They can shoehorn into the purchase and it ends there. It is sad to see and time doesn't seem to be providing much hope for those that actually have to work just to have a home.

Mike- that's what you want from a Realtor, especially for a first time home buyer.  It's why we go to any professional.

Yeah totally cheeseball and totally visable to almost anyone. If you cant be honest and treat people right you are in the WRONG biz being in Real Estate. Slow cumbersome and not designed for the "quick kill" like cars or yachts or other high ticket items. Not too mention those others dont have 1/10th the regulations too!

Good job treating them fair and allowing them to be comfortable instead of "force feeding" them!!!

Kudos brotha man

That is just sad Mike. But I'm glad they fired him and called you. They'll relax seeing that you truly do have their best interest at heart and then their home buying journey will become as pleasant as it ought to be.
