Yesterday I got a call from a friend and client who recently moved to Virginia from the west Coast....

She asked me:

"Charles What is an ice-storm?"

Well an ice storm is easier to explain (like a lot of things) with a few pictures!

Notice in the above picture that it is cold enough for the rain/ice to from and freeze around these branches.

Here is a photo of a Dogwood Tree (in my front yard) look at the back branches and see how the water has frozen in place!

We have four wonderful seasons in Charlottesville and every day is an adventure!

Charles - that dogwood tree looks like it might have buds on it - will the ice storm kill them or are they not really buds at all???

Charles, ice storms leave trees and shrubbery with a pretty coat of ice, but they're dangerous!  Drive safely, my friend.

We have 350 schools closed in Metro Detroit today, snow storm. I would rather deal with snow than ice. Ice is more damaging, but beautiful non the less.

We've got the ice.  Lots of it.  Everything close, everyone panicked.

Charles...Here at Lake Anna we just had rain.  I shouldn't say just rain.  We had lovely, badly needed, wet, wet rain coming down at a very healthy rate.

Even though I had an appointment to show houses this morning I was not disappointed to see the rain.  That's how much we need it!

Plus, we'd already had a back-up plan to meet on Sunday if it was too bad for the folks to drive down from Winchester today.  The plan was for them to call me early this morning if they were postponing, which they did, so I didn't have to really rush out to be stood up.

Now I'm enjoying a day in the rain on the Rain.

Cheers,

Kathleen

I did some fancy footwork this morning on the ice in PA - not all of it gracefully or successfully.  We don't have the pretty ice on the trees (that I know of).   I'm sure the trees are grateful.

Hey Charles,

We have been hit in Roanoke too. The Ice on everything can actually be quite beautiful... that is until the limbs and lines start to fall.

I remember a few of these from growing up in Wisconsin. It was a mix of natural beauty along with fallen tree limbs and power lines from the weight of the ice. Hope everyone there slows down on the roads and stays safe!

Charles,

This reminds me of growing up in Michigan. It's beautiful but it can really wreck havoc. I'mn going back to Michigan next week and I hope it warms up.

Charles,
Ice storm provide wonderful photos but did you lose power?  That's usually the worst part of an ice storm.

C'Ville is beautiful all four seasons!  Spring is probably my most favorite there....the scents are so heady and the blue ridge is alive with color.

Ice storms can be really beautiful, but can wreak havoc on trees and power lines. Like Trey, I always keep a camera in the car. sometimes 2.  8-}

When I used to live in upstate New York, we had awful black ice.  It was terrible to get around in but it was beautiful to look at.  Now that we live in Cleveland, Ohio, we don't get the ice but we have snow that could bury you.  It, too, can be beautiful to look at but awful to get around in.  Not quite sure which is worse - the ice or the snow.

One thing is true - it can all be beautiful!

Charles, I love the look and feeling of being frozen in. Here in Texas we usually get one ice storm a year and this year we are still without. I love turning the heater up, building a fire in the fireplace, curling up with a warm blanket and reading a book till sleep sets in. Our roads shut down entirely when this happens and there is nothing to do but rest. AWWEE...rest. Thanks for the thoughts Charles, Deb

ALL - Sorry for the delayed responce... a lot going on! (all good)

These Storms are beautiful and they are also dangerous on the roads. What is amazing is when the ice starts to melt, it is like diamonds falling from the trees! The sun just is incredible shinning through them!

Glas you all enjoyed the photos!

It's the "black ice" that will get you! Drivers who are not experienced can get in real trouble in this....
