50 Comments on HOW DO YOU EAT AN ELEPHANT?....Bite by Bite!!!
Hi Paula:
I'm back in the business after 17 years away running my own luxury retail store. It is practically all new to me and with the added technology explosion I'm feeling overwhelmed. It is good to read a reminder about eating the elephant bite by bite over time. It really does take time to build anything worthwhile, now doesn't it?
Hi Paula - we all like immediate results but no doubt that some initiatives take time to build. Thanks, Dave
Fernando: Isn't that so right? Focus is another point that should always be instituted--that and the idea that you mention: "focus on the big picture and don't limit ourselves"...that my friend is right where I am about all this..thanks!
Paula: I agree; we can't and we shouldn't delude ourselves into thinking it all ours! It's not, pick your space, corner, avenue---what ever you call it and excell at it! What could be easier to to achieve--then move on to the next one!
Ridhi:You CAN do it--just don't keep looking at the destination--keep your eye on the path and the trek will unfold as it should and you will not trip and fall---look out there with expectations as to what you will find at the end and you are apt to miss the boulder or the branch and trip on over it....stepp by step...bite by nite!
Wayne: Yes you can! ...my favorite words to hear...and to say to another!
Paula: You are someone who will definitly make it...big! That elephant is SO good that you can tempt others with it too! That is what I am finding; having tasted elephant, I now want more and more and I want to teach others. What is that old saying you can't have it until you give it away? That's the way I am getting it right now---what good is the taste of elephant if no one else knows how good it is to eat it??? Keep helping by passing it around and I will too. One day we can all have a sense of just how important it is to enjoy each bite, before we take another; to pick each blueberry bush clean before moving on to the next; to take the careful steps of a trek, step by step.....until we get there to accomplishment!
Randy: You are so wise to be able to see that--wisdom does come to those who have survived the fires and the bullets and the more we go through--as in your case, the more ready we are to hear what it is that it takes to do the right things, step by step, bite by bite! Good luck in re-joining this wonderful world of buying and selling houses.
David: You are dead on the mark there--achievement is an award that comes from hard work and patient labor over something---you can't win that award any sooner!
Paula, even being out in front takes time...you're setting yourself apart and with aplomb....good for you!
You don't have to be IN FRONT, just DIFFERENT> Think of a herd of brown horses -- you want to be the purple horse.
Paula, loved the tile of your post and the analogy. Setting oneself to the idea of overnight success could lead to a road of failure. It does take time to perfect any system or tool, patience and perseverance has always paid off for me.
Ginny: Thank you--I wish it was not so but it is. Time is the adherent that gives us the opportunity to look and to really see the pattern if we want to see it. By rushing past it--it blurs and crumbles around us in shambles, that thing that we seek...respect of time is how one makes the big moves forward--in time we can have what we seek.
Erica: I love purple--and yes, if I were one looking to gain the edge to the front, I would be purple!
Ellie: Glad to hear it--and if you continue in that way, it will not evade you, the success that you seek. I tell myself all the time to take the slower move forward just so that I don't overstep the real activity in the housing market, thereby missing it in my haste. I have found more business in that way than any other....step by step...bite by bite..
I like this approach. It is important to take little bites and move forward.. rather than do nothing. I missed a couple of your posts and I will have to read them asap.
GREAT POST! Great Advice & Great Information!! Thanks for sharing :)
Cheryl: Great! Good luck with your proceeding with it and the eventual outcome!
Joan: How nice of you to go back to read them! Doing nothing is not an option for me but i know that there are people who can be frozen in fear when they are faced wth a daunting project--therefore they do nothing.
Kent: Thanks for reading this--and you are welcome--please share this with whomever you choose too!
Paula - As long as we are taking it bite by bite, we'll get there just perhaps not as fast as we'd hope.
Congratulations on the another feature, Paula!
Yep: bite by bite, step by step, post by post. Consistency is the most important in marketing and service.
Chrisitne: I always look at it as a hike or a trek; at one time I was hiking a lot in Arizona and I got so much from my hike leader who used to say s things like: "Keep a positive thought" just as the hike became almost impossible to finish...or "the hike doesn't care how you feel about it...just do it step by step."...and "The path is what will take you to the end, so focus on the pathway not the destination"...and "Taking the next step is what you should be concerned about not how long it will take to get to it" These gems were inforgettable to me because I was in it and experiencing the pain, the exhaustion, and the anger at the idea that I went on the hike in the first place!...real words to live by in all of life!
Inna: Thanks Inna; I see how you brought it all together, including the idea that the posts we write must ALSO reflect the idea of "bite by bite"---that is exactly what I was hoping you all would get from this elephant story!
Grat post and great title. I love the analogy. We all need to keep our eyes on the prize.
Gary: Thank you so much for the compliment! Yes, keeping the the end in view but not forgetting about the journey is the wise way to handle our tasks!
Paula, great post. you are so right about this. I doesn't happen over night and takes time. one Bite at a time
Frank: I feel vey fortunate that I wasn't told in the very beginning that this is the way I would have to operate in order to be successful in this business--because I would NEVER have started in real estate in the first place!
Paula: I am always improving, changing, upgrading, and plain old fiddling with my Internet marketing. And it's working. I am not one to take Big Bites, just a steady upward/forward progression towards my goals. I feel comfortable working that way.
